Vixen Optics 3562 overview

  • 1Description

Controlling where a spotting scope, telescope, or high-powered binocular is pointing can be a tricky task.  But by using the Piggyback 1/4"-20 Slow Motion Controls from Vixen between your lens/spotting scope/binocular and your tripod head, you'll gain accurate slow motion adjustment in both elevation and azimuth axes (up/down & left/right).

The device has a standard 1/4"-20 threaded tripod screw upon the bottom, and thus attaches to anything with a 1/4"-20 threaded tripod screw.  On top it has a standard 1/4"-20 threaded tripod screw so that you can put any lightweight spotting scope, telescope, or binocular upon it.

Being quite stable and not terribly heavy, it is a popular accessory to put between a spotting scope and the fluid head moving it about to achieve the ultimate in control.  You'll have the capacity to follow birds in flight at moderate magnification with the fluid head itself, as well as zeroing in upon stationary birds at high magnification with the Piggyback unit.

Handles bigger scopes easily

Piggyback 1/4"-20 Fine Adjustment DX is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very useful purchase I first tried digiscoping when an osprey began taking trout breakfast and dinner on a pole 540' distant. Problem was - while at 90 power the osprey filled the frame - keeping him there while locking the head was so impossible that I dreaded trying. Thus the piggyback is a big relief. I can just get close and make the fine adjustment easily. For astronomy it's equally useful. Simple, elegant solution with plenty of range. Adjustment screws are visible, so re-centering would be easy when needed. Thanks for making this available.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid base for camera The product does a good job - allows for fine control of alt and az movements (up and down and side to side). Control knobs are a bit close to the part - if you have a large camera or scope attached they can be difficult to reach without bumping the camera. But control is solid and smooth. Solid metal construction is firm. Arrived with some play in the alt direction but easy to tighten the bolt - just a quarter turn and the mount is solid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential Accessory I can never get a camera / telephoto / tripod quickly positioned exactly the way I want without a lot of repositioning. This solves the problem. Its really sturdy for its size (all metal except for the knobs). This allows you to have the tripod head of your choice combined with geared fine adjust movement. Works great for piggybacking on my cassegraine too. I like the position adjustment to knob turning ratio.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Made My Eclipse Photography a Success! I planned to take a few photos of the eclipse with a canon SX50 at 1200 mm focal length. At that magnification and small field of view, I was unable to track the sun with either a gimbal or pretty good ball head. This device worked very well. Once the sun was roughly aligned, I could easily keep it centered. The mechanism consists of 2 tangent arms, one for horizontal and the other for vertical movement. The range of motion is not enough to allow tracking over a long period of time, but was fine for the 5 minutes or so I tracked during totality. There were bits of backlash and overshoot when turning either knob. It was easy to compensate after a little practice, but is the reason if give 4 stars. Whether a heavier load would make the overshoot better or worse I cannot say. Everything but the knobs is metal and made with quality. It worked best atop a pan head. I used a ball head for the eclipse because my pan head tripod was longer and wouldn't fit in my carry on bag. The ball head was a little more challenging because the sun was elevated 63 degrees. Nonetheless the Vixen device worked great. I can't wait to use it in other situations and would recommend it.
