Pentax 77mm f/1.8 Overview

  • 1Description

Distinguished by its unique focal length, the black smc PENTAX-FA 77mm f/1.8 Limited from Pentax is a short-telephoto prime well-suited for portraiture. The optical design pairs with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture to promote greater control over depth of field for using selective focus and the seven elements in six groups design helps to realize accurate tone and color rendering. This lens also uses the Fixed Rear Element Extension (FREE) focusing system to maintain image quality, sharpness, and clarity throughout the focusing range, from 2.3' to infinity.

Short-telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Pentax K-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 115.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality.
Fixed Rear Element Extension focusing system helps to maintain high sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy throughout the focusing range, from 2.3' to infinity.
Built-in lens hood protects against stray light from causing lens flare or ghosting and also guards the front element from accidental scratching or impacts.
Aluminum-alloy lens housing is both durable and lightweight.

    Pentax 77mm f/1.8 Reviews

smc PENTAX-FA 77mm f/1.8 Limited Lens (Black) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 74.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sharp lens Now that I have the full frame K-1, I needed a fast lens for portraiture and the 77mm fits the spot for now. Compact and light as a feather compared to full frame designs. Sure it is a film era design and the focus isn't as fast as modern designs but for portraiture work this isn't a major issue. Can use it on my K-3 as well. Very pleased at how sharp this lens is at 1.8 as well as across the entire frame. I had the 70mm 2.4 and it was sharp too however it will only work on the K-1 stopped down where as the 77mm 1.8 is 100% compatible with the K-1. Maybe when they come out with a 85mm 1.8 or 1.4, the 77 can serve on my K-3.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, but I returned it First, let me say that this lens is all they say it is. It has pixie dust qualities and it produces images that were as magical as I expected. The reason I returned it was I already own a SMC DA* 50-135mm, which is also a pixie dust lens, and I can get the same focal length within its range. I was tempted to keep the 77mm because it is small and so much easier to carry, but it is an expensive luxury. Yes, the 50-135mm is a big, heavy lens, but I just couldn't justify the 77mm price. I bought the 77mm just to see if it had any better image qualities than the 50-135mm, but the differences were not noticeable. So, if you want a fixed focal length, go with the 77mm, but if you want flexibility, with the same kind of image magic, go with the 50-135mm.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great candid portrait lens OK, so I've been lusting after this lens for a while and might be a bit biased, but I'm super happy. I am not a pro, just an avid photographer with lots of reasons to take pictures. What I love: I love the bokeh, lives up to everything in the other reviews. I love the focal length, it is great for capturing the candid portraits, i.e. I dont interrupt the moment when my kids are engrossed in doing something worth catching. I used to shoot weddings, and this would have been great for the candids. I love the ruggedness of the build, it doesn't feel like a toy. What I am not so keen on: The lens cap is tight...I always feel like I am going to bend the telescoping hood when I take it off. The dreaded purple haze on the high contrast shots. In all fairness I knew about this going in, so it is not so much a downer, as a reality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have lens... This lens's focal length is just right for portrait photography. The portraits are very nice looking and without any distortions. Also it's very useful for street photography. Even at f:1.8 the images are very sharp with a very nice bokeh on the background. When you start to take pictures, you'll see it deserves every penny you pay for it. my last word, just buy this lens, and you won't regret it...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Great for portraits, nice bokeh. Great partner for K10D, but also feels very good and performs well on 35mm bodies (MX and LX) using manual focus. Really nice construction. Bright enough for poor light portraits without flash. Picture quality very good at f1.8, extremely sharp below f3.5. Got this for taking pictures of my kids, now stays on the camera most of the time. Have used Pentax for 30 years, including other lenses in 70 - 120 range. This one is by far the best and is a gem. Not cheap but a bargain for the quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing clarity Got is last week - went camping this weekend. Did some AMAZING portraits of friends and family around the campfire. Using it with Pentax K-7. Bouquet is perfect, extremely sharp and crisp focus, colours jump out at you. Did some with terrible backlight - and the lens performed amazingly. Very light and easy to take on hikes and camping trips. There is nothing not to like about this lens - it just looks and feels great. The lenscap is different, but have not had problems with it so far. If I could, i would buy it again...and again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from THE lens! Hi, I am a med student from Guatemala, and I recently entered in the world of DSLRs and bought a K-5. In my country there is not a Pentax retailer, and it may very well be no Pentax K5 owner at all. I was looking for a good lens to be THE lens for my new camera. After an exhaustive research and a lot of reading I concluded that one of the best lenses for Pentax were the three Limited's. Among those I chose the FA 77 because the focal length suited the most my purpose. It has been one month since I have it and I can tell that it produces really good pictures, far better than the ones with the kit lens. And I am really happy of my choice. So I encourage those people like me that dont have an easy access to a retailer or access to used products consider buying this lens as THE lens for their camera (or any of the limited's). Have fun shooting!
