    Pentax 31mm f/1.8 reviews

smcP FA 31mm f/1.8 Limited Lens (Black) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 93.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leica in Disguise This lens is super sharp even wide open. The only drawback in my opinion is serious CA at wide open. The CA goes away by f4. I have mixed feelings about the CA issue. I am paying top dollar for a prime lens and I do not want CA. At the same time the lens is perfect in every other respect. If you did not see the Pentax logo on it, it can easily be mistaken for a Leica lens. That in itself is a mjor accomplishment for Pentax. All said and done, it is a keeper. Quit complaining and start creating images!! I have rediscovered the joy of photography with this lens and my new Pentax K5IIs. What a combo!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lives up to the hype This is a perfect walking around all-purpose lens. It is incredibly sharp corner-to-corner at all apertures, and color and contrast are absolutely mind boggling from f/2.5 and beyond. I have some other great Pentax lenses, like the 21mm/3.2, 15mm f/4, and the 40mm/2.8, and as far as image quality is concerned, this one outclasses all of them in every way. The only downsides so far: * It is a bit large and heavy (but just a bit). * It is an older style FA lens, so there's no quick shift like you get on the more modern Pentax lenses. * Expensive, but I don't think you can find anything like this lens for any DSLR camera system at any price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Finest AF Lenses These are film-era lenses with screw-drive autofocus. Pretty quick but make a slight noise. The older SMC coating is also prone to fringing wide-open in high contrast situations. Luckily there's a PP adjustment in your Pentax body to help minimize. Quirks aside, they quite possibly capture the most stunning and vibrant photos on film or your DSLR sensor, which help explain their continued production and high demand. The FA-31 is the biggest and baddest of the trio. When you need the extra degree of coverage for group shots and landscapes. Downside is the extra weight and bulk. If you are good at composition, your photos WILL stand out!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best of the Best Best lens ever for street and landscape photography. Ridiculously sharp, and wide open lets you shoot hand held in very tough lighting conditions. Metal body is a pleasure. If you are comfortable walking a bit to frame your shots, rather than using a zoom as a shortcut, the reward is improved image quality. The contrast and bokeh are pro-grade; cannot recommend this lens enough. Note that this 31mm film lens becomes a 50mm normal lens on a 3/4 sized digital sensor. So, the legendary lens with the best image quality also has a very usable focal range. Only drawback is the lens cap - it is so nice, and made of metal, but you feel sad if you scratch it when you put it in your back pocket with your keys!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extreme clarity I now use a 15 mm, 31 mm, and 50 mm focal length primes for almost all of my photography. Unless I am in an auditorium and can't move, this trio of lenses gives me the range I need for landscapes and portraits. The FA 31mm has very high resolution and very good bocah. Sharpness is tight even when wide open. The lens is quite expensive and cost as much as my camera body. However, unlike the body I expect this lens to hold value or even appreciate in value in time. It will be a lifetime purchase that will travel with me in time from Pentax body to body.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The hype is true! I always considered this lens to be to expensive and could never justify its price. As i slowly tried lenses after lenses trying to find what i like, i finaly ended up here, with 31 and the other two. I was happily surprised with everything about this lens! Its size, build and focal length (APS-C). All the aspects of this lens is great, and its sharp sharp sharp, and the bokeh is great for a wide lens. The only things one can think of as downsides compared to other brands is: Its an old lens, built in AF and WR would be great. But all those modern things would significantly take away the Limited feel of this lens. It is what it is, and its great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite Pentax lens I've had this lens for about a year now, using on my K-1, and it's now my favorite lens for Pentax, bar none. I've also got the 77 ltd, 100m macro, and 70 - 200 D-FA*. This beats them all (though all are excellent). It's just the right focal length for a variety of uses, the colors and contrast are just beautiful, and it's totally razor sharp, especially when stopped down just a little bit (though 1.8 is still great). Only downsides are it's *slightly* slower to focus given the screw-drive, and some might not like the mild vignetting wide open (I actually like it, oftentimes). Purple fringing can be present, too, but that's easily nipped in lightroom. All in all, if you could only get ONE lens for the K-1 (or any Pentax body), get this. You will not be disappointed. Worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp! Sharp! Sharp! Did I mention that this lens is sharp? It's sharp. Tack sharp. I got this lens a number of years ago to use on my K-5, K-3. Images were great, and the focal length was good on the crop sensor body. Combined with the K-01 (the mirrorless brick), image are even better. Put on on the full frame K-1, and you'll start to understand what "pixie dust" is. Based on the f-stop used and the focal distance to the subject, the bokeh is really interesting. And the image quality produced by this lens is amazing. Definitely at the top of my recommendation list. If you're thinking about it, then buy it. You'll never regret owning this lens.
