Audio-Technica U851R overview

  • 1Description

Styled in a black finish, the U851R from Audio-Technica is a condenser boundary microphone operating in a cardioid polar pattern. It's capable of picking up frequencies between 30 Hz and 20 kHz, though the microphone does offer an 80 Hz high-pass/low-cut filter. This is useful for mitigating frequencies which often interfere with the vocal range in conversational situations. That low-cut filter, coupled with the mic's dynamic range of 108 dB and low-profile design, render the U851R more than suitable for capturing audio in conference rooms, boardrooms, classrooms, stage performances, podiums, houses-of-worship and other situations.

Key Features
  • Rotating output connector allows cable to exit from either the back or bottom of the microphone, depending on your preference
  • Polar pattern's off-axis rejection allows for high levels of gain before microphone feedback
  • UniGuard technology offers RFI (radio frequency interference) rejection, thus rendering a cleaner signal path
  • Small-diameter capsule mitigates phase distortion even at high volume
  • Durable casing
  • Non-slip silicone foam-bottom pads reduces coupling and other sonic problems resulting from surface-to-surface contact between microphone and mounting area
  • Low-profile black design for minimum visibility, maximum camouflage

    Audio-Technica U851R reviews

U851R Cardioid Condenser Boundary Microphone (Black) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! These boundary mics are just the thing when you have multiple speakers for instance. I put two on a tabletop while the presenters were using their computers and the audio was clear and crisp, with no hint of feedback. The most surprising aspect was that the mic rejected the ambient sounds like table pops and people using their keyboards, and didnt sacrifice vocal clarity... and the mic never clipped at all. The only possible shortcoming may be the snake that runs from the mic to the XLR connector... and that is that the cable appears to be thinner gauge that I would expect. I dont forsee any problems but I can see that becoming a possibility over time... however, I understand their reasoning as the mic will need to be placed on a tabletop, so a bigger cord may look out of place. Overall, very VERY impressed, and as an audiophile, that is a lofty compliment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These worked exceptionally well. Used three of these for a town meeting in a room with terrible acoustics. They worked great. One of the mics sounded a little bit metalic but I think that had to do with the soundboard we were using. In a small conference room, one mic covers the entire room. The only thing I wish they had was a mute toggle button but for the price they are very good for speech applications.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good PZM Mic Use this mic on an altar for Mass. It has performed very well so far. It has a long XLR cable which is good to have. It needs phantom power to operate.
