Olympus 18-180mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

This lightweight, compact lens has a 10x zoom range covering the equivalent of a 36-360mm lens on a 35mm camera. The closest focusing distance is down to 45cm in entire zoom area, and 0.23x (equivalent to 0.46x on a 35mm camera) of magnification allows for superb macro shots. Two ED lenses and two aspherical lenses compensate for optical aberration to give the lens high-performance through the entire zoom range.

    Olympus 18-180mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

18-180mm f/3.5-6.3 ED Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 53.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens As a fire scene photographer, you don't want to be changinglenses with water, embers and soot all around you. Thislens doesn't have to come off the camera and gives greatwide angle shots, while the full zoom gives quality thatlooks like you're using a fixed 50mm lens from 2 feet away, when you're really 50 feet away. It was a gift, butprobably the best investment one could make for a generalpurpose zoom lens. Expertise: Advanced amateur Previous Equivalent Item Owned: None-switched between 14-45 and 45-150 lenses

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great all around lens! A good lens with 10x zoom. It covers the focal length of two kit lenses with the Evolt 500. Price was fair, quick shipping, and the rebate made the purchase even better! Smooth zoom operation. Expertise: Novice. Very novice. Problems Encountered: Forgetting about the lens lock. Nice feature if you don't want the lens to zoom in while in storage or transit.Trouble focusing at maximum zoom. Probably my fault not holding the camera steady. Tripod helps greatly. Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Olympus 17.5-45mm, Olympus 40-150mm (still have both) Items I Recommend: Get filters

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My friends are buying this lens too! After using this lens for some time I have no reservations recommending it to my photo friends. We do a variety of photos and are often in the position of having the wrong lens. With this lens we do not lose the shot because we are trying to change a lens on the run. Just working in a studio is another matter but we are doing landscapes and wildlife under all weather conditions so a lens with 18-180 zoom is likely to get the shot before the subject exits the scene. It is not a good idea to be changing lens on the run with cold or wet hands and this baby solves the problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good versatile Lens I have used this lens for about a year now and find it quite versatile given the cost. I opted to get this lens instead of the kit lenses and have never regretted this decision. Yes it does not perform well in low light but with a FL36 flash I have gotten some really nice portraits. But its really a very good outdoor lens. At F16 I have gotten some sharp city landscapes on sunny days and nice sharp cloudy day pictures at F8. I also own 50mm F2 which I consider my indoor lens. It also performs well as a macro capturing buzzing bees and such with great clarity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel lens. I have had this lens for close to 2 years. This is a great general purpose lens. Take anywhere anytime, especially outdoor activities. Cheap enough that if it breaks, replace it. Good enough that most pictures are incredible (good optics). Biggest issue is trouble with FL-36 and red-eye reduction, flash has trouble synchronizing (both with E-500 and E-510). I thought it was the camera until I tried other lenses. It has trouble focusing in low light, so indoors photos are usually a challenge. While the lens has its drawbacks, in their website Olympus does define three levels of quality on their lenses, and this one is at the low one. You are getting what you pay for (and more), a great general purpose lens for most of your activities. I would recommend a tripod when at the 180 range, but if you have the E-510 you can get by without.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than expected Normally I am using either the 12-60 or the 50-200 Zuiko lens on my E3, however after traveling for weeks on Borneo, this equipment is actually to heavy in the jungle when you also need a backpack for your private things. I have bought the 18-180 Zuiko lens and a Loewepro Outback 200 in order to be able to travel with only one lens and a camera bag which makes is possible at the same time to use a backpack for private things. For the time being I haven't yet taken a lot of photo's with the 18-180, however it is build like the other Zuiko lenses, meaning that the quality is as expected. With sufficinet light conditions the AF is fast and the quality of the pictures in general is good. I am looking forward to the next trip to do a more detaied test.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very versatile lens This is without a doubt the most versatile lens that I have ever owned. I never take this lens off of my E-500 and often do not even carry another lens with me. The 2x multiplication factor of the 4/3-lens system makes for great zoom from a compact lens (35 mm equivalent 36 360). Problems Encountered: No problems.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Real workhorse I bought my E-330 with this lens and have not really needed any other lens. Overall I have been very happy with it and it covers almost all shooting situations as I had hoped. I wish it had a little less telephoto and a bit more wide angle. I am considering getting the 7-14mm lens when I get the money! I find it good in most situations but it does have few shortcomings. It is not quite as sharp as I would like it to be. In low light or shooting dark subjects it often won't focus or takes a long time. In bright daylight, however it is fast. Since a lot of my shooting requires my camera to point down on a copy stand, I have problems with the lens self-extending unless I hold the zoom ring. I wish the zoom lock worked at any position and not just full wide. Despite the shortcomings, I would not want to trade it for the two or three lenses it replaces. I spent too many years lugging big camera bags around and changing lenses.
