Pentax 50mm f/1.4 Overview

  • 1Description

A standard lens for Pentax autofocus cameras with a bright f/1.4 aperture.  The SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 is an excellent choice for lowlight handheld photography, and effectively becomes a brilliant short telephoto portrait lens when used upon the *ist series of digital SLR cameras.  The Pentax Super Multi Coating process provides the highest possible transmission of light.

If you use the SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 with an *ist series digital SLR camera and desire the light-shielding contrast benefits from a lens hood, Pentax's RH-RB49 hood (catalog number 34774, B&H item code "PELH70210AF") provides the most effective shielding.  While this hood would cause vignetting with a full-frame 24 x 36mm-type camera(such as a Pentax 35mm SLR), the smaller 23.5 x 15.7mm sensor size of the *ist series makes the RH-RB49 an ideal shielding device.  In such applications, a 49mm polarizer can be used at the front of the hood with no darkening of the image corners.

    Pentax 50mm f/1.4 Reviews

    Normal SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 Autofocus Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 146.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rarely off the camera since I got it This lens is amazing. I am not the best photographer but this lens makes it appear that I am much better than I am. I got it for portraits really but end up with it on the camera about 80% of the time. Though it is fixed at a pretty close zoom, the range of focus is enough that all kinds of shots work out. Setting it to 1.4 and moving the focus in and out while snapping shots gives such a wide range of variation on any object or scene that it is hard to come away without a good shot from the bunch. Get this, you will love your Pentax more than you already do. You will not regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes I would recommend it. Excellent glass. Very sharp and precise . Great low light performance. Incredible optics for such old technology but PENTAX prove it again that they make high quality product with no exceptions. Get any lens from a past or new just use it for right sensor format. These 50mm f/1.4 is beautiful. Light weight, compact, fast, produce an excellent bokeh and have a very small DOF. Love that lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't hesitate I know what you are doing. You are sitting in front of the computer, weighing your options, doing the research and trying to justify purchasing a new lens. I've been there and chose this lens. Trust me on this. Don't hesitate. Buy it. It is a marvelous lens with true versatility and amazing sharpness of focus and bokeh. If, like me, you have to date only been exposed to zoom lenses, the increased quality of this fixed focal lens will astound you. It is a steal at twice the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens at any price! I have owned my k10D for less than a year and was using theincluded 18-55 and 50-200 zooms only. The pictures werepretty good and I was fairly happy enough with them, considering the k10K is my first digital SLR. However, when I saw the results of shooting with this amazing littlelens, I packed my zooms away in the drawer. I use the 50mmfor everything I can. I also purchased the 70mm f/2.4, 31mmf/1.8, 14mm f/2.8 and the discontinued 35mm f/2 - all Pentaxlenses. These lenses are all far more expensive than the50mm, yet the 50 and 35 are my standard lenses. This is agreat little lens! Expertise: lifetime amateur and once-in-a-while pro Problems Encountered: Not one problem. Previous Equivalent Item Owned: 35mm f/2, 70mm f/2.4, 31mm f/1.8, 14mm f/2.8, 18-55 zoom, 50-200 zoom

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT LENS From the very first time I used this lens I knew it was a winner. I used it for a clients portrait session at a near by park and the results were amazing. Tack sharp and beautiful bokeh!! This little lens put my DA* 16-50 to shame. The quality is like night and day. I sold the 16-50 and now I'm on a PRIME lens hunt. Please dont waste your money on a UV filter unless your shooting film of course. Digtal cameras are NOT sensative to the UV light that the UV FILTER is blocking. Try a clear filter from ...!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Bargain It is difficult to imagine finding a better lens at any price, but at this price, it is absurdly good. There is nothing better for chasing around an active 1 year old, and wife that hates to pose, and being able to produce excellent portraits. If you only buy one lens, make this it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This lens tells the truth If you buy yourself into Pentax, forget about the kit lens. Buy a body with this lens instead, and you will get much higher fidelity. In high contrast situations however, the FA50 has quite a lot of CA. If that is a problem, you might want to spend a few extra $ on one of the DA Limited lenses instead. Obviously, the low price comes at a cost: the build quality. After one year of wear and tear and 10000+ shots, I had to buy a new FA50. Despite the plastic build quality and its CA problems (especially wide open), the FA50 still gets 5 stars out of 5 because of the overall quality of the pictures it produces.
