Universal Audio Solo/610 Overview

The SOLO/610 from Universal Audio is a microphone preamplifier that delivers the classic Putnam 610 console sound to the single channel format in a rugged, highly versatile form factor, at a price every project studio can afford. The unit provides the silky vintage warmth of the original UA 610 console used by artists ranging from Sinatra to Van Halen.

It offers microphone and DI inputs and features Gain and Level control for a wide variety of clean to colored tonal shaping. Unlike its predecessors, the Gain control has an even greater gain range, allowing for more precise gain structuring while also doubling as input signal padding. Additional features include a DI Thru for when the unit is used in conjunction with an amplifier, plus a ground lift switch.

Unlike stationary rack gear, the SOLO 610 can be conveniently used in the control room or recording room, on stage or desktop due to its portable go-anywhere design. It has the same solid build and audiophile components from its more expensive siblings like the 2-610 and M610 and includes all the essential features like 48V phantom power, low cut filtering, phase reverse and flexible dual impedance selection for both the microphone and DI inputs.

Universal Audio Solo/610 Reviews

I LOVE THIS THING!!!

So, I was on the fence about buying one these because I'd never actually owned a quality standalone preamp before and I thought the preamps on my apollo twin were already pretty good (which of course they are), but after reading through the reviews for this beast extolling it's sound I thought I'd take a chance. Man oh man am I glad that I did. Everything sounds so warm, smooth, and detailed now that I barely have to EQ my vocals. The noise floor is incredibly low and contrary to a few reviews I've read, I get plenty of headroom to work with. I really couldn't be happier with this purchase, so if you find yourself in a similar situation to where I was, I suggest just going for it.

Great sound

I read a lot of reviews of this preamp which complained about the lack of headroom and tendency to distort the signal easily, producing a wooly, dark, or muddy tone. If you are looking for a clean, all-purpose preamp with very little character then this is not what you are looking for. However, if you are after a warm, dreamy tube-driven sound then this is a great low-price preamp to add to your arsenal. It's become my favorite preamp for a classic acoustic guitar tone paired with a beyer ribbon mic-- beautiful warm, woody sound with a little gentle tube compression. Happiest I've ever been with an acoustic guitar.
