Hoya GIK58GB overview

  • 1Description

The Hoya 58mm Introductory Filter Kit includes a 58mm UV Filter, a 58mm Circular Polarizer Filter, and a 58mm 81A Color Conversion Filter. Each filter in this kit fits a lens with 58mm front filter threads and can provide one of three of the most widely applied enhancements to your imagery. Additionally, these filters are constructed from optical glass within an aluminum-alloy frame, which protect the front element of a lens from scratches, bumps, or impacts. A filter pouch that can accommodate all three filters is included for storage and transport.

The Hoya 58mm UV Filter is a general use, clear filter designed to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. Aside from the reduction of unwanted blue casts, no additional coloration or contrast is created, and adjustments to exposure are not required while using this filter. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing approximately 96% light transmission, each glass surface includes one layer of anti-reflection coating.

This UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Such filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your front lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

The Hoya 58mm Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This circular polarizer filter is uncoated and has approximately 96% average light transmission.

The Hoya 58mm 81A Color Conversion Filter can be applied to create a warm cast over an entire image. This effect can be obtained under daylight when this filter is used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected. This filter's overall coloration corresponds to an ability to reduce 3400K color temperatures to 3200K, which reflects a mired shift value of +18 that can be applied to other starting color temperatures as well. The greater the color temperatures they can potentially reduce to 3200K, light balancing or color conversion filters are considered to be progressively stronger in their effect when used to add warmth to a daylight image.

Hoya 58mm UV Filter
  • Absorbs UV light and reduces bluish cast of daylight
  • Does not require adjustments to exposure while in use
  • Single coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing approximately 96% light transmission
  • Creates no additional coloration or contrast
  • General protection filter reduces dust, moisture, and scratches from reaching lens elements
Hoya 58mm Circular Polarizer Filter
  • Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface
  • Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light
  • Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors
  • Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun
  • Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features
  • Non-coated
  • Approximately 96% average light transmission
  • 3 to 4x filter factor reduces exposure by 1.6 to 2 stops
Hoya 58mm 81A Color Conversion Filter
  • Can add a warming cast to an entire image under daylight when used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected
  • Provides a mired shift value of +18
  • Reduces 3400K color temperature to 3200K
  • 1.4x filter factor reduces exposure by 0.5 stop
  • Single coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections

    Hoya GIK58GB reviews

58mm Introductory Filter Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 95.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Deal and High Quality Lens The lens pack is a much better deal than purchasing each separately. It was like buying 2 and getting 1 free. The Circular Polarizer lens is excellent for helping with take pictures of water or through glass to eliminate glare and reflections. The UV is clear and didn't introduce any artifacts or degrade image quality the way Tiffen UV lens I originally purchased did. It also comes with a carrying case that has room for an additional lens. From a wish-list perspective, I think having a snap case would have been better to keep dust and dirt off the filters while stored.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Starter Kit! I'm a beginning photographer and I bought this set of filters for my Canon EOS T1i. The set has good value and the glass quality is fine for the price. I mainly use the circular polarizing filter but having the other two filters is nice as well. Considering that just buying a Hoya 58mm polarizing filter is $40, just a little more for three different filters is nice. There obviously are much better filters out there (Hoya and otherwise) but they are more expensive. For a beginner, these filters are great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great kit for price I bought the Hoya 58mm introductory kit because I was looking to get a few filters, specifically a polarizer and a UV filter. I thought for the price it was worth a shot. In hindsight, this was a great purchase. I keep the UV filter on at all times (helps keep you from scratching/damaging your actual lens) and it hasn't impacted the quality of my pictures at all. The warming filter is fun to play with as it adds a little more yellow to the overall tone (very nice for warming portraits), but my favorite of the 3 is definitely the polarizing filter. On vacation recently, I really got to use it to full use at the beach and pool and it didn't disappoint. It does a nice job of bringing out the colors in my skies as it cuts the reflection in the water. All three filters come packed in a folding carrying case with a velcro enclosure which is great for throwing in my bag. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this set for anyone who's looking to pick up a couple of filters for a minimal price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect filter collection If you need to replace your existing filters or just getting started; this kit offers all the most commonly usedfilters. Has a nice reference manual for all the filters in the Hoya line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An inexpensive test kit I always add a UV or glass filter to the front of my new lens to keep them free from dirt and scratches. I almost bought just one filter and decided to test this kit. I read on one review about someone who had a filter come apart and I'm not sure how that could happen. My experience shows Hoya to be top drawer. I keep the UV mounted all the time and when appropriate I'll add a second filter to alter the image.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great!! What more can you say? Three useful filters of very good quality, all inside an included carrying case. I can't comment about the quality level of different filters, but for the price these seem to give excellent quality, at least good enough to learn what they do as your photography skills grow.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Value! I just purchased these filters and have had them for about 2 weeks. I have only had a chance to use them twice but the photos have come out just great. I can't wait to have some time to really use them them with my lens. I mostly do outdoor photography.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheap but functional It's a cheap set of filters and it's not real high quality, but it gets the job done. If you're a pro this is probably not the way to go, but if you just want to get started with some filters that work this might be for you.
