Pelican 1614 overview

  • 1Description

The Pelican 1614 Waterproof 1610 Case with Dividers (Desert Tan) is an unbreakable, watertight, airtight, dustproof, chemical resistant and corrosion proof hard case used to carry any kind of equipment. The 1614 is the designation given to the base 1610 case when the padded dividers are included. The case is made of ultra-high impact structural copolymer that makes it extremely strong and durable. It has a 0.25" (6.4 mm) neoprene o-ring, 4 easy-open double throw latches that seal perfectly. It has a built-in automatic pressure equalization valve for changes in altitude or temperature. The case uses stainless steel hardware and has padlock protectors to provide added strength and extra security against cutting and theft. It is carried by 3 comfortable rubber over-molded haul handles, a retractable handle and built-in wheels.

This case includes a 16-piece padded divider set consisting of 1 tray (22.5 x 18.6x 8.2"), 2 long (7.0 x 20"), 7 medium (7.0 x 5.0") and 6 short (7.0 x 4.0") padded and flexible dividers. One top lid foam section is also included.

    Pelican 1614 reviews

1614 Waterproof 1610 Case with Dividers (Desert Tan) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 105.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best for travel I was looking to upgrade from a rolling backpack, and got some great advice: don't go for a huge case that can hold everything; instead, get a couple, each of which an assistant can handle, will fit in a car trunk, and which the airlines will take as checked luggage. This case is the happy medium for me between upsizing and manageability for location shoots -- deep enough to hold most of my gear up on end, and with fabric padded dividers that won't crumble into my gear like foam might. The interior of the case is organized into three strips of padded pockets along the long edge of the case. The ones up front are doubles, and can handle 15-20 small lenses and accessories. I can stack my smallest lenses on top of each other in drawstring bags. The middle row can handle your long lenses. I have a 70-200 2.8 in one of these cases, and a large Manfrotto clamp set in my other case. If I loaded my 200-400 f/4, it would take up the entire middle row and squeeze the adjoining rows along the hood. The back row holds my pro bodies up on end (swaddled those velcro-type camera diapers), and my SB-800 flash and a Quantum turbo battery up on end with room for some reflector cover cloths and other junk. All of the dividers are adjustable and removable, but the ones along the back row have a unique elastic expanding design that lets you put them at obtuse angles (instead of situating them parallel to the sides of the case to divide the row up into rectangular-shaped cavities, you can divide it up into trapezoidal spaces for when you need to drop something in at an angle) while still maintaining a continuous padded barrier from the next compartment. Overall the case is of typical Pelican quality -- premium quality, and this model is particularly ingenious in construction. The roller back is a separate flat plastic back that conceals a sliding handle (made from a solid piece of molded plastic, instead of a flimsy pair of metal telescoping rods with a handle as in luggage), and rollerblade-size wheels (except a bit wider). The entire handle/wheel assembly is attached with 12 bolts to the back of the case, so it's durable enough I think to handle being the new bottom of the case. The top secures with four flip-down latches, and can be secured with two locks, the hasps of which feed through two metal-reinforced holes on each corner of the front of the lid. Although you could go with the Peli-locks, I found that standard padlocks and key locks from the hardware store to universally fit the case, and are far more substantial for times when you might have someone other than a TSA agent trying to inspect your gear. I added a lid organizer, which attaches with six automobile-type pan-head screws, giving me another dozen or so flatter pockets, very useful for holding cables, memory cards, manuals, lens paper, a hat, and even a 5-in-1 reflector. All told, with the cases loaded, I still am well under the 70 pound limit most airlines require to check the cases at any price, with 20 pounds of case and 50 pounds of gear. I can't easily carry more than that anyway or expect a young assistant to. And with frequent flier status, I won't be paying extra for either of these anyway -- you get 70 pounds on most with elite status. It will not fit as a carry on by any stretch of the imagination. Alas, it also lacks a hole in the side to feed through your iPod headphone cable, which seems to be a requirement for most other carriers. ;-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product, very durable Only negative comment is that I would have liked more options for configuring my gear. All the small dividers are one size. (2) medium sized dividers would have been more versatile. I had some from other gear so I was able to configure case to meet my needs; otherwise, there is in my opionion some negative space. Look closely at pictures provided. Only really set up for (1) large dslr. I did fit two in my set up. Pelican makes amazing cases. Highly recommend. Just really know what size you want & what you need to put in it before choosing what style you get.... Just in case you don't get it right the first time. Found the right Pelican model on the 3rd try:-)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice case... This case is great but the dividers are NOT the ones described or pictured. There are 16 panels NOT 27. Also, they are not as well padded on the bottom as my other pelican dividers. Plus, they are black and not tan as pictured. This makes it more difficult to quickly see the gear you need to grab. It really seems like Pelican didn't make these. Case is great though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome case! This case is just... SO... AWESOME. When it came to the door, it was in a flimsy cardboard box, kind of falling apart. But that almost made pulling the actual case out so much more overwhelming. The case itself is so impressive, nothing rattles, the plastic is a tough composite, which flexes just enough to let you know it will never crack. The wheels don't jiggle, but are still very smooth, everything about the case spells rugged. Opening up the case the padding from the dividers were just everywhere. It comes with so many pads, I don't think there's a way I'd ever use them all. Here's where the case gets a star off from perfect. It doesn't seem like the interior padding was made for this case. It kind of turns up a little instead of sitting against the walls, because one of the sides is too long. Seems like a small thing, but it actually hinders the setting of all of the other walls in the interior. Does it affect performance? Maybe, maybe not! Anyway, the case is enormous, weighing in at 22lb, empty, there's practically no hope in getting this thing standard airline check-in compliant at 50lb. No matter, it's a great way to lug things around by car, and worse comes to worst, I can always pay the extra bit for overweight luggage. I chose the 1614 because I needed it to carry my portable studio. Here's a basic list of the things I always have in it: 3 einstein e640, cables, 7reflectors, 20, 30, 40 grids, vagabond mini, extension cords, power strips, and a 24 flat panel monitor for on-site proofing. On top of that, there is plenty of space to fit at least 2 more vagabond minis, or another einstein, and other accessories. This is a fantastic case, and I will definitely be getting a couple more down the road!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sturdy, Versatile, almost perfect This case is tough and sturdy. There is a good bit of variety in how the partitions can be arranged. I have a 4x5 view camera, 5 lenses, 8 filmholders, 2 Hasselblads, and some odds and ends and still have open compartments. The way the sides of the soft insert come apart makes insertion of the dividers delightfully easy. The case rolls very easily and is highly maneuverable. The only criticism I have is that it has very little padding in the bottom, particularly over the wheel wells, and I recommend a layer of bubble wrap under your sensitive items. I would recommend this case and would buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT CASE I like this case a lot. At first it was a little bigger then I was expecting. But I quickly got used to is and have found it very nice to have the extra room! In the case I can very comfortably fit all my necessary video gear. Canon 60D SLR camera 4 batteries Memory Cards Canon 70-200mm L IS telephoto lens Canon 28mm EF Lens Canon 10-22mm Wide Angle EF-S lens Wireless Microphone transmitter and receiver Boom mic LOTS of tools Small consumer HD camera Addition Video camera cables And if I want I can take apart and fit in my shoulder rig and follow focus system. So this case works great for me! It's quick and easy to reconfigure to accommodate different gear for different shoots. But I love having one central place to keep all my equipment in on a shoot. Vs. having it spread all over the place. Case is very tough and strong! And looks and feels great! It's heavy but I don't mind. After all it's much lighter than carrying around my older brother's amplifiers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Studio in a box I use this Pelican as a local travel lighting kit for Speedlights, stands, mods, grip stuff, etc. I can fit 4 SB800's, 2-4 PW's, 2 Wescott umbrellas, 4x8sheet rip stop diffusion cloth, 24 4-Square soft box, reflector, 3 Manfrotto speedlight stands w/knuckles, Speedlight gel kit, Magic Arm, Super Clamp, Justin Clamp, 1-2 Boa 10 lb shot bags, cables, batteries, and I still have room. Bomb proof, rolling, it's great! I store all my Speedlight accessories in this case and now know where everything is, which is not something I could have said before buying. Only knock is it's a little heavy, but it rolls. If I don't need everything for a given shoot, I pick the gear I need and put in a smaller case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just Right Everyone knows how great the Pelican cases are. What you're probable wondering about is the size. For me this 1610 is perfect. I currently pack it with two Einsteins, two reflectors, two grids, and all of my cables and triggers. I still have room for at least two more Einsteins and probably a battery pack or two. I originally tried the 1510 and it was way too small. Also, it's not really that heavy.
