does what it saysI bought this case to carry my Nikon D200 with battery pack, 70-200 f/2.8 VR, and teleconverter. It just fits, with the converter stored below the lens/camera. That's some fairly large, very expensive gear that I wanted to take with me on my boat. Top loading makes it fairly easy to get at my gear, but the case is a bit top heavy and tips easily with the gear loaded. Well, at least it's well protected. I own 2 other Pelican cases, the 1550 for traveling with pretty much all my gear, and the 1400, which will hold several lenses or a smaller camera and lens set-up. Actually, the 1400 would hold the equipment described, but not with the lens mounted. I've been very satisfied with all of them.

Sturdy, easy to customize interiorI bought this particular case as part of my computer backup strategy - I wanted a rugged case that could hold up to 4 external hard drives so I can rotate my backups onto 1TB drives and then store the backup disks off site. I figured the yellow case would have higher visibility in a worst case where I would have to scramble to find it. The pick/pluck foam interior is very simple to use - conveniently partially cut in 1/4 squares so it's easy to pull out just as much as you need. I've used knives to cut the solid foam in Halliburton cases and they never end up as clean-looking as this.

Reliable & ToughWe use this on a open deck boat where safe storage space is rare. We use this to protect our things (safety gear, tools, electronics) from salt water as well as any damage that may result from boating in rough waters. It's easily portable, but has more volume than it looks like-- at the same time it can get cramped if you have lots of equipment. I would consider getting two of these or one larger one (if portability isn't a big concern) if you have lots of equipment.

High Quality ThroughoutI recently went on vacation that included about 30 hours on a Zodiac boat over the course of 5 days. I needed a waterproof, sturdy and quick access case in which to store my SLR during those many times when salt water was splashing in the boat. The Pelican 1430 was constantly wet and bumped around, yet my SLR was safe and dry. The two latch system was secure, yet provided very fast access when a photo opportunity arose during those rare dry moments. The top loading design was especially useful for quick and safe access when in a crowded situation with people and snorkeling equipment. The foam inserts are designed as three layers of customizable blocks can be configured easily to fit your equipment like a glove, but I found that using just a liner of foam and wrapping my SLR in a towel was more convenient if the case was to be used for fast access. The towel approach also left more room in the bottom to carry lens cleaner, spare batteries and memory cards. The hinged lid was quite stiff when it was new but loosened up with use to a comfortable level. At the end of each day's excursion, I just rinsed the case exterior with a hose without any worry about getting the contents wet. The case can be used to transport your SLR and accessories when traveling, or as I did I just packed it in my suitcase and carried my SLR in a conventional sling-type back pack. If you plan to use expensive equipment in environments where impacts or liquids are present, this is inexpensive insurance and provides peace of mind.

Another great Pelican product!!!For me it is a great improvement over my 1300 case because of the top load feature. It fits perfectly in a canoe and I can access my camera very quickly. I have not used the foam insert yet. I just put my camera bag in there and it works fine. I was able to fit my nikon D5100, two extra lenses, go pro camera with several different mounts.
