Pentax 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 overview

  • 1Description

The Pentax smc P-DA Fish-Eye 10-17mm ED (IF) lens was designed exclusively for use with digital SLRs, and combines full-frame fisheye (180° diagonal angle of view at a focal length of 10mm) to super wide-angle performance in a single unit.

This lens makes it possible to capture images with an expanded perspective including creative deformation of subjects and sharp pan focus that extends throughout the entire frame.

Note: Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras.

Ultra Wide Angle
This lens enables the shooting of fisheye images with a 180-degree angle of view and a focal length of 10mm. Furthermore, the lens offers super wide-angle performance that allows photographer to make use of dramatic changes in angle of view resulting from slight changes in focal length.
Equivalent focal length to 15mm-26mm in the 35mm format with *ist DSLRs.
High Optical Performance
Employing ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass, this lens effectively compensates to overcome chromatic aberration throughout the image. And with improved optical architecture and a ghost-free lens coating, ghosting and flare are suppressed to produce clear, high-quality images more of the time.
Exclusive Digital Design
The image circle of the lens has been created to match the smaller image recording area of the *istD-series. This ensures precise optical performance ideally suited to the camera's digital imaging characteristics.
SP Coating
SP (Super Protective) coating made of a special fluoride compound has been applied to the front surface of the new lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water- and oil-repellant performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.
Super Macro
An ingenious internal focus system allows photographers to focus from as close as approx. 1" (approx. 2.5 cm), giving them the power to fill the whole frame with surprisingly small subjects.
Quick-Shift Focus System
The Quick-Shift Focus System allows to instantly shift to manual focus once the subject is captured by AF.
Durable metallic lens mount.
Exclusive lens cap constructed from high-quality aluminum.

    Pentax 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 reviews

    SMCP-DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED Autofocus Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very cool lens Just got this long awaited present-for-myself and have been putting it to good use in the two weeks since it arrived. Very very cool lens with very interesting results. The zoom range Although only 7 mm arithmetically, actually bears quite different composition structure at either end of this range of 10 to 17 mm. Very sharp optics, as has been described in plenty of reviews here and certainly on Pentax forms. Superb - typical Pentax, class act - build quality. Very compact. Just boarded a flight to South America and intend to put this lens to plenty of use there. But based on my first several hundred shots so far - this lens is unique - and a keeper !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from it's a good lens Hello, to be honest I'm French and I came to the USA a few days. I decide to buy this lens not on a whim but I thought for a long time. So I price my creative mind to tell you that this fish-eye is exactly for you. Whether you want to take landscapes, buildings, people. You will be conquered your first images. I counsel you, it's light takes up little space. It is flexible in use. So if you have a lot of imagination. This lens you expect. My english is not perfect i'm sorry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp Lens with Unique Perspective At 10mm this truly provides a fish-eye effect, but at 17mm this lens functions well as an ultra wide angle lens. Very sharp images and excellent color rendition. Skies appear polarized. Only draw back is that due to the curvature of the lens, a protective filter cannot be installed thus leaving the front surface exposed and vulnerable. Pentax assures that the special coating on the lens is effective against normal hazards such as finger prints, etc. Best treat this lens with care to ensure that the lens remains pristine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised I bought this lens in hopes of having some fun with the ultra wide angle effects. Haven't used it a lot yet, but so far I am surprised and impressed by its high quality. The images are tack sharp throughout the zoom range with a rendering that can look almost three-dimensional. Auto focus is fast and quiet, and the build quality does not feel cheap. As to be expected with this type of lens there is substantial purple/green fringing in areas of high contrast; however, it can be easily and entirely eliminated in Photoshop. I am already having fun exploring the compositional possibilties and am looking forward to a lot more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Two lenses in one If You want something wider than 18mm and have always wanted a fisheye this is a good choice. It covers the widest needs and focuses at six inches for dramatic effect. Very compact but nicely built, and just heavy enough to balance out the camera. My new favorite car show, interior and play around lens. Auto focus is quick, but a little noisy, and I suggest picking up a spare front cap as it is specific to this lens and the only way to protect the front element (no filter threads). You might want a nice case as the pouch that comes with it is ill fitting and not very protective. A very good product overall

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pentax DA 10-17 Love the ultra wide angle range of this lens. I also have the 16-45 but find that the DA 10-17 adds a whole other dimension to ultra wide angle perspective. I mostly use this for landscapes but it clearly has some very interesting potential for architecture and bringing a different perspective to all your photos. I found very little distortion, great contrast and nice crisp images. Very pleased with this lens and found it to be a great value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Need a wide angle with options? This is it. The lens is crystal clear from 10mm to 17mm, which is expected of a Pentax lens. I have several prime lens but needed one with extreme wide capability. I considered another prime lens but decided ton with the zoom lens and am satisfied with the decision. The 10mm has the fisheye effect which has enabled me to add a different creative touch to some subjects. The 17mm, with the non-full frame sensor, has been just right for landscape shots during a trip to Alaska. While I don't use it at every shot location, I always have it with me. Glad I bought it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding landscapes, beautiful skies I bought this lens specifically for a long trip to the canyons in Arizona and Utah. I used it more than I expected: This lens produces stunning images - in the fish-eye as well as in the wide-angle range. Sharpness, color and contrast are in the best of Pentax tradition, and the construction is very solid. Highly recommended!
