Telephoto prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 157.5mm equivalent focal length.

Ideal for macro shooting, this lens offers a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 1' to suit working with close-up subjects.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
Both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by three stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

I have the older 105 micro, but it doesn't have vibration reduction. This one does and it works great. It focuses quickly and is very sharp. I'm glad I bought it. Great lens.

Sharp long macro lens

I purchased this long reach macro for shots that require to a longer distance than my Micro Nikkor 60mm, such as at the NY Botanical Gardens or with insects. The longer distance also allows better lighting. In the attached shots I use Bolt LED macro lights The sharpness is very impressive, especially on my D850. It is a heavy lens (all that beautiful glass) and AF does not always work at *very* close distances which is true in general for macro. Macro shooters often set approximate focus and move the lens towards the object with a macro focusing rails for pinpoint focus. VR works fine for close-up but is less effective at very close distances, for which I use a tripod and rails anyway. Because 105mm is my favorite focal length for portraits I will try it out in the studio.

The Nikon/NIKKOR 105mm Micro f2.8 lens is the best micro lens I have ever shot with. It is super sharp and fast focusing, The image quality is outstanding.

Loving it on F & Z mounts!

Even though I shoot Z and F mount bodies, I remain wedded to this lens rather than the new Z MC version. While the newer Z model may be sharper wide open or into the corners stopped down, for what I shoot in the near/ macro range, mid-aperture performance is just right for my needs with the added versatility of working with all of my bodies. While I have a range of F & Z mount zoom and prime lenses, this remains my most-used prime lens. Highly recommended!

Very sharp but noisy

I tried 2 samples of this lens fro B&H. Both make a continuous whiring noise when VR is ON and Liveview is ON (focus settings or AF activation don't matter). This is different from my other Nikon VR lenses. However I've heard from others that theirs is the same.

I really like this lens. I also have the Micro-Nikkor 105mm D lens, which I will continue to use on my Nikon film cameras including my beloved F6.

What is the primary difference between this and the NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens? Which would you recommend for portraits?

The macro is a flat field lens with slightly more contrast. It stops down further (not something you really want on a portrait generally). The f1.4 is a curved field with more vignetting, also a great portrait lens. More than double the cost. I like the 105mm focal length for head shots over an 85mm. With a portrait sometimes you want a "creamy" soft look. Photographers that did old large format Hollywood or formal portraits would try to get the eyes sharp the edge of the ear soft. See Hollywood images from 1930s, 40s, 50s. Karsh images are great too. There are lots of great examples out there. Another consideration would be the Nikon AF DC-NIKKOR 105mm f/2D Lens. You really need to know what you are doing with that lens.

Yes, the Nikon 105mm f/2.8G AF-S lens is fully compatible, including autofocus, with the Nikon D5100. This lens has a built-in focus motor.

My old 105 f2.8 D would not allow f2.8 aperture ...

My old 105 f2.8 D would not allow f2.8 aperture at very close focus distances. As focus distance goes down the max f stop increases. This occurs in auto focus and manual. Is this an issue with the new F/2.8G IF-ED VR lens?

Thom Hogan explains this variability in his review of the lens: "I have news for you: all of the fixed focal length Micro-Nikkors aren't actually fixed focal length. In order to keep from being enormously long when focused at 1:1 magnification, Nikon (as well as many other macro makers) plays with the optical formula in order to keep from having an ever telescoping lens barrel. In macro work, you wouldn't want that, anyway, as a lens barrel that telescoped significantly to get to 1:1 would reduce working distance and potentially start hitting things in your scene at close working distances. Thus, at 1:1, this lens becomes about f/4.8 and does not extend even a millimeter. The aperture loss is actually a bit less dramatic at lower magnifications and the non-extension is very much welcome for macro use."

To clarify for all those reading this questions and answers in 2021. B&H has combined the questions and reviews for the US and Imported models, i.e., the same questions and reviews are attached to both products. This is standard operating mode in the modern online market. It is fine when someone asks about a feature such as "what version is the VR?". It sucks when someone asks "Is this Grey Market?". As the staff answer says, B&H labels each version clearly and explicitly. But note well, it's up to you to hunt out those labels.
