Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Overview

A tremendously flexible standard zoom for APS-C-format DSLRs, the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM from Canon pairs the 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range with a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. Benefitting this design is a sophisticated optical layout, which includes both Ultra-Low Dispersion glass and aspherical elements to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness throughout the zoom range. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in bright environments.

Beyond the optical attributes, this 17-55mm is also characterized by its advanced three stop-effective Image Stabilizer system to minimize the appearance of camera shake. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Versatile wide-angle to portrait-length zoom is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-S-mount DSLRs and offers a 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Two Ultra-Low Dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to three shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design and optimized focusing algorithms, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Don’t think so. This is for crop sensor cameras like the 80D and 90D.

Hi, Does it work with RED Epic DSMC EF mount camera? Does the IS work on this camera?
Asked by: Sabyasachi
This does work with the RED DSMC EF mount. As far as image stabilization you do maintain IS with image stabilized compatible lenses.

1. With lack of weather sealing, is the lens more susceptible to dust damage? 2. Is this lens upgraded from previous version, I’ve read comments and watched review videos that it loses its Image stabilization after intense use? Not sure if true or not.
Asked by: Nesta
This lens is certainly not as well constructed and weather sealed as an L lens, but that is to be expected. I've used this lens for a couple years, under some pretty intense circumstance. Dusty and sandy ones, including trips to Petra, Jordan (dusty and sandy, lots of hiking) and rock climbing in Utah (lots of dust and sand being blown by the wind, lots of hiking). No issues with stabilization. There does seem to be some grit stuck inside the focus ring (can feel it when it is turned), which is another complaint I have seen some owners post about, and may eventually cause the focus ring to stop working. So I have been considering getting the lens serviced professionally. But given what I've put this lens through, this issue is not surprising. Moral of the story, this lens is probably not going to last as long as an "L" series lens (which seem to practically never die). But for the price/value and image quality, I'd say it is well worth buying, and just use it and enjoy it, and not worry about whether or not the stabilization will break or not.

The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 lens is my main lens for most situations. Love the lens and use it on a 70D and 90D with no issues.

Being that this is for an apsc camera, does that ...

Being that this is for an apsc camera, does that mean that it is 17-55 and not multiplied by the 1.6x crop factor. Ik that with full frame lenses it is, but being that this is for an apsc I'm just confirming that it is true 17-55
Asked by: Kyle
Whether this is an aps-c lens or full frame, you still have to do the math on a cropped sensor camera. You will always have to do the magnification factor with any lens, for example 17-55mm x1.5 crop factor.
