Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

A tremendously flexible standard zoom for APS-C-format DSLRs, the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM from Canon pairs the 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range with a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. Benefitting this design is a sophisticated optical layout, which includes both Ultra-Low Dispersion glass and aspherical elements to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness throughout the zoom range. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in bright environments.

Beyond the optical attributes, this 17-55mm is also characterized by its advanced three stop-effective Image Stabilizer system to minimize the appearance of camera shake. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Versatile wide-angle to portrait-length zoom is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-S-mount DSLRs and offers a 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Two Ultra-Low Dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to three shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design and optimized focusing algorithms, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

I use this lens for over 12 years. Great all around fast lens. I have no dust issue due to quality UV filter is always on the filter.

Sands and Dust, not worth it

The lens as such is good but for the price I expect it to be weather sealed. within three months, it accumulated sand and hear grinding sounds from the focus ring. Have to spend another $250 to repair it. I regret buying this lens. If you still want to buy, don't forget to buy carepak.

An awesome EFS lens!

I've thought about this lens for almost a decade but I've always opted for something different. Now that I'm using my 90D for video and youtube this has become a very valuable piece of class. The 17-55 is fantastic for talking head teaching videos and the 2.8 gives me a BOKEH that my 24-105L F4 just can't quite do. B&H is awesome as always. I buy nearly photographic or electronic gadget from B&H if I can.

Best EFS lens in the lineup

I was unhappy with my Canon D50 until I tried this lens. Its great. It made me love my D50 body again. Sharp, fast, quick focus. Its an oldie but goodie.

Finally!

So thrilled to finally get the flexible wide angle lense I needed! The perfect Chirstmas present for myself!

It hardly leaves the camera.

This might be the only lens you really need. It practically lives on my T6i. This lens produces stupidly good images with mediocre effort in the spur of the moment. It's a swiss army knife of a lens. It's not light, but I like the weight which helps keep it steady. I bought it along with an EF-S 10-18, but I've only used that lens a couple of times because the 17-55 performs so much better. I have a full frame camera and there's simply nothing that compares to this 17-55 for the full frame that isn't at least twice the price and for that reason alone I won't be abandoning the T6i anytime soon. If you can't get a great image out of this lens, an L series lens isn't going to make it happen either. I use it for portraits, scenery, long exposures, night sky, and it rarely fails to get the shot I want. I simply love this lens.

Superior optical performance!

This lens is very sharp with excellent contrast. Focusing is very swift too. I highly recommend coupling this with the Canon EOS 90D. It really lets that 32MP sensor strut its stuff. My only caveat is that it lacks Canon L lens level sealing. Otherwise, love it!

Excellent versatility

Happy to say the new purchase of the Canon EF 17-55 mm f2.8 lens was a sure fit. The ability to use this in lower light conditions just adds to it's versatility.

f2.8 on this lens compared to Canon 50mm 1.8 ...

f2.8 on this lens compared to Canon 50mm 1.8 makes a difference? f2.8 on this lens feels less bright. let me know if anyone noticed it. Tested on Canon 80d
Asked by: Nagendra
This lens would be less bright as it is about a 1 and 1/3 stop difference in the amount of light let in. You don't get quite as bright as the 50mm but you can zoom.

question

I want to verify that this product is compatible with a Cannon 70D Camera. This is a EP-S lens and they are compatible with a APS-C Sensor (the 70D) but can't find it on a list that is compatible to a Cannon 70D because it is a just released camera.
Asked by: Anonymous
As the Canon EOS 70D DSLR camera has both an EF and EF-S lens mount, the camera accepts all EF and EF-S lenses manufactured by Canon, and would be fully compatible with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Zoom Lens.

I'm shooting on a Blackmagic 6kPro using a Canon ...

I'm shooting on a Blackmagic 6kPro using a Canon 16-35mm lens which is spec'd for use on a full frame sensor, the 6kPro has a Super 35 which is basically an APS-C. If I were to use the Canon 17-55mm lens, which is spec'd for the APS-C sensor, would I see a notable difference in the field of view?
Asked by: Andrew
Field of view would be the same if the lens is 17mm full frame or if it is 17mm apsc, the angle of view will be the same on the Blackmagic 6kPro. If you need something wider you need to go to 11mm like this one. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1119028-REG/canon_9520b002_ef_11_24mm_f_4l_usm.html

Water resistant

Water resistant
Asked by: Gary
For Canon lenses, only the "L" series (red stripe around the lens barrel) are weather sealed. The lens in question might survive a light mist or a few drops of rain, but I definitely would not depend on it being water resistant. Avoid exposure to water and keep it covered if it starts raining.
