Canon EW-83J reviews

EW-83J Lens Hood is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 119.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great on 17-40 f/4L I purchased this for use on my 17-40 f/4L USM when using that lens on my cropped (APS 1.6x) DSLR, my 10D. The hood works great and provides much better shading and protection in that situation than the hood which comes with the 17-40. It snaps on and off easily, and fits much better in a bag or backpack when reversed on the lens. There is no vignetting at any focal length or aperture when used on a cropped digital body. My only complaint is the price. It's rather steep for a piece of plastic and velvet. (Which is why I gave 4 stars rather than 5.) Never the less, if you use a 17-40L on a cropped Canon DSLR, this hood is a dramatic improvement over the included hood which is shaped for full frame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Be sure to look under the hood ! Bought this to go with my new 17-55 2.8 IS USM. I looked at other non Canon aftermarket products and although they were the exact fit/replacement for this hood I opted to go with the real thing and I'm glad I did. After receiving it I noticed the finish was MUCH better than the other cheaper replacement hoods. The cheaper ones also were more reflective than this hood, which being a wide lens would be important to me. I also figured quality only hurts once and I would not have to go out again and purchase another hood that would eventually chip or crack etc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An essential though costly accessory Essential but not included with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens. As expected, it is well matched with the lens and does an effective jog of controlling light entering the lens without intruding on the image at any zoom setting. It is even possible to (carefully) adjust a circular polarizer with the hood in place.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it's supposed to it Does what it's supposed to do and does a great job of protecting the front element. Turns on securely and I like that the inner side of the hood has a black felt like material to reduce any kind of glare. Downside: It's expensive and prone to scratching.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Don't mess around with knock offs I originally had a knock off lens hood for my Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 lens but it would never stay on tightly. It looked okay but poor workmanship caused it to slip and part of the petal even showed up in some of my pictures. I bought this one and have never had a problem. The Canon brand hood is also more durable than those cheap knock offs. I will now always stick with Canon for my lens hoods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have! If you bought the 17-55mm 2.8 this is a must have item! I know that the lens is already expensive and this hood is not very cheap, but if you decided to make such an investment on the lens you should get this. People creticize Canon for not including the hood with the lens but in my opinion it should be the customer's choice, cause if you are a photographer that will use this lens mainly in low light environments and indoors, than you don't need a lens hood.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very useful but overpriced The 17-55 f/2.8 lens deserves some good protection, specially considering its huge 77mm front element. Very useful in keeping rain, snow and fingerprints out. And yes, it should be included in the package for a lens in this price range but what can you do?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as expected The hood can be turned around and installed on the lens, protecting it while not adding much bulk. The lens cap fits securely when the hood is so installed. The lens cap is difficult to install when the hood is installed for taking photos, but this is common to all hoods I've used.
