Nikon ED50 Overview

The straight viewing Fieldscope ED50 13-30x50 Spotting Scope from Nikon is a compact and lightweight spotting scope with a 50mm ED (extra-low dispersion) objective lens for chromatic aberration. Nikon especially developed ED glass to provide precise optical color correction.

The ED50 scope is offered as straight or angled viewing design. Most users will prefer angled scopes because they are both simple to use for birds perched high above the viewer as well as easily simultaneously shared amongst users of differing heights. But some will prefer the straight viewing models, for these are much easier to use when hunting down the object of interest in the first place.

Nikon's Fieldscope line of spotting scopes are premium offerings to compete with the best of sports optics manufactured in Japan or Europe. You choose your options based on concerns for mass and budget: straight or angled, objective diameter, and whether to spring for the ED glass for more favorable appreciation of highly detailed subjects.

All of Nikon's spotting scope line is backed up by the "No-Fault" 25-year warranty. Regardless of what happens to your scope—even of your own negligence—Nikon will repair or replace (at their option) your scope for just $10 plus the return shipping costs.

Christmas present so still new. It came much faster than expected and in great condition. I took it out to view waterfowl with other birders Mine was the smallest and lightest scope in the group so great for field work. I used it handheld and passed it around. Wow was the unanimous reaction. Super clear and bright. Focus is easy to use. . I ordered a handholding case and will also try with monopod and light tripod depending on trip. I chose straight scope because other reviewers stated optics were brighter for this compact beauty than in the angles version. I have not compared them. It would be easy to window mount if desired. Many reviewers have recommended sliced wide angle eyepieces for better field of view but the zoom lens is quite good as is. I used without eyeglasses and I think the fold down eye cup could be annoying to those who switch back and forth. The case is great for carrying but you cannot use the scope without removing it entirely. This little gem will go virtually anywhere I can so I am looking forward to lots of use.

Probably the best 50mm scope available. Very low weight with good magnification. Great for backpacking hunters.

Great Light Weight Scope

We are using this for birding. It is very light weight making it easily portable for hikes when we don't want to drag around a big heavy scope. It is a nice cross between binos and a full sized scope, able to be hand-held but more powerful than binos. The case it comes with is not field-use friendly. It has to be totally removed from the bag-like case to be used and is somewhat slippery to hold. Could not find an on scope protective case in the US but have 1 coming from the UK. Hope it works.

This is the scope that I carry now. Excellent views, low weight, really enjoying the wonderful views this small scope provides.

Light and easy for travel

The light weight impressed my fellow birdwatchers. Glasses wearers need to fold back the eyepiece housing. The angle body version is the same price.

It's OK

The Field of View was smaller than expected and the eye relief wasn't great. No problems with the clarity. I ended up sending it back and buying the Vortex 15x50 HD binoculars. Has enough reach for my needs, bigger field of view, and got the tripod mount. It's light weight combined with the small FOV made it hard to hand hold. Even on the tripod, touchy as all scopes like this are likely to be.

My brother brought this scope to Costa Rica last year, and I was so impressed I had to get my own. I bought this scope primarily to use as a travel scope when space is tight, and as a scope light enough to take on long hikes. This scope can easily be carried onto an airplane in a carry-on bag. I love the light weight, as well as the brightness of the image. I will probably end up springing for a more powerful eyepiece before my next trip overseas, as the 13-30 eyepiece that came with it has limited magnification.
