Sony 50mm f/2.8 Macro Overview

Make sure you have the right tools to capture small details and get sharp close-ups by picking up this 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens from Sony. This normal-length full-frame lens is designed for A-mount cameras, and is able to realize a true 1:1 magnification ratio through a minimum focus distance of just 7.9". The lens also features an aperture range of f/2.8 to f/32 for control over depth of field and it uses a double-floating elements design to minimize aberrations, even at close-focus distances.

Handling is optimized for speed and comfort, starting with an Auto Clutch mechanism that prevents the focusing ring from rotating when autofocus is engaged. Also, the lens has both a focus hold button and focus range limiter for intuitive and fast control over certain aspects of the lens during shooting. Additionally, it has a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus elements.

This normal prime macro lens is designed for full-frame Sony A-mount DSLRs, and can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
True macro design affords a life-size, 1:1 magnification ratio along with a 7.9" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects. A focusing distance and magnification scale is also printed on the top of the lens to aid in more technical applications.
An aperture range of f/2.8 to f/32 allows for operation in a wide range of shooting situations and enables photographers to better control depth of field.
Double-floating lens elements help to minimize aberrations, especially when focusing at extremely close distances.
An Auto Clutch mechanism prevents the focusing ring from rotating when the lens is set to autofocus, allowing for easier, and more natural feeling control over the lens.
A focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between a set limited range or full for improving focus speed, and a focus hold button is also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Is this lens fully compatible with Sony FS5-II ?

Is this lens fully compatible with Sony FS5-II ?
Asked by: Richard
Hi Richard, The 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens can be used with the Sony FS5-II with A-mount to E-mount adapter LA-EA3 or LA-EA4. However this comes with many limitations [For LA-EA3 : Autofocus cannot be used. Available with a Mount Adaptor. The SteadyShot is not supported. The operating noise of the lens, such as during zooming and focusing, may be recorded during movie recording. Auto iris adjustment is not available in movie mode. Changing the iris during recording may create operating noise or make the screen brighter during operation.] [For LA-EA4 : Available with a Mount Adaptor. The SteadyShot is not supported. The focus area cannot be selected arbitrarily. If you use AF (Autofocus), the aperture will be fixed to F3.5, or the largest aperture if the lens' largest aperture is smaller than F3.5, during the movie recording. If you use MF (Manual focus), the aperture can be selected before recording when recording movies in the A (Aperture priority) mode. The operating noise of the lens, such as during zooming and focusing, may be recorded during movie recording. Auto iris adjustment is not available in movie mode. Changing the iris during recording may create operating noise or make the screen brighter during operation.]

question

I don't believe this lens is directly compatible (e-mount) with the Sony NEX-7 camera... Is this a correct assumption? I'm looking for one that is and it doesn't have to be a Sony. Anything good and reputable, thanks.
Asked by: Anonymous
Unfortunately, no, the Sony 50mm f/2.8 Macro Prime Lens is not compatible with the Sony Alpha NEX-7 Mirrorless Digital Camera. It is designed for the Sony A-mount/Minolta MAXXUM lens mount. We currently only have two (2) macro lenses listed for the Sony E-mount used on the Sony Alpha NEX-7; the Sony 30mm f/3.5 Macro Lens for Alpha NEX Cameras, B&H # SO3035, or the newly-announced Zeiss Touit 50mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount), B&H # ZET2850ME (Expected availability November 2013).

question

would this work on a sony a7r?
Asked by: Devin W.
The Sony 50mm f/2.8 Macro Prime Lens uses the larger Sony A-mount/Minolta MAXXUM lens mount, while the Sony Alpha a7R Mirrorless Digital Camera uses the smaller Sony E-mount lens mount. As such, the lens is not directly compatible with the Sony a7R without the use of a lens adapter, such as the Sony A-Mount to E-Mount Lens Adapter (Black), B&H # SOLAEA3. If you are looking for a macro lens designed for the Sony E-mount that would attach directly to your camera without the need of a lens adapter, then I would instead recommend the Sony 30mm f/3.5 Macro Lens for Alpha NEX Cameras, B&H # SO3035, for your needs. The links for both items are listed below.

Can I confirm that there isn't a lens hood ...

Can I confirm that there isn't a lens hood included?
Asked by: Kelvin
That is correct. Based on Sony's website and from what the front end of the lens looks like, it seems that this lens does not accommodate the traditional bayonet-style lens hood. You can consider a screw-on lens hood, like this one from B+W: https://bhpho.to/3qHYrbi

question

Sounds like a great lens. Can it be adapted for a Canon 5D iii ?
Asked by: Albert
Only if you like to invest in a Canon to Sony lens adapter. I am not sure if they exist but they do the other way around.Ask your friend Google ;-). Usually, he gives you quite quick an answer...
