Sony 100mm f/2.8 Macro Overview

Get up close and personal with some of the tiniest subjects with the 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens from Sony. A telephoto prime designed for full-frame A-mount cameras, this lens' main selling point is the minimum focus distance of just 13.8", permitting for true 1:1 magnification. It also has a fast maximum aperture of f/2.8 and can be stopped down to f/32 for advanced depth of field control. In order to guarantee maximum image quality at these close-focus distances, the lens uses double-floating lens elements in its optical design, helping to combat aberrations.

The 100mm Macro is made for smooth operation and handling, with both a focus hold button and focus range limiter providing tactile controls to speed up shooting. It also has an Auto Clutch mechanism that prevents the focusing ring from rotating while using autofocus. Additionally, it has a nine-blade circular diaphragm for smooth, rounded bokeh.

This telephoto prime macro lens is designed for full-frame Sony A-mount DSLRs, and can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 150mm equivalent focal length.
True macro design affords a life-size, 1:1 magnification ratio along with a 13.8" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects. A focusing distance and magnification scale is also printed on the top of the lens to aid in more technical applications.
An aperture range of f/2.8 to f/32 allows for operation in a wide range of shooting situations and enables photographers to better control depth of field.
Double-floating lens elements help to minimize aberrations, especially when focusing at extremely close distances.
An Auto Clutch mechanism prevents the focusing ring from rotating when the lens is set to autofocus, allowing for easier, and more natural feeling control over the lens.
A focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between a set limited range or full for improving focus speed, and a focus hold button is also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

question

Someone use in A99? in fullframe mode? Foco in movement is very slow?
Asked by: Mauro Lucio A.
As the Sony 100mm f/2.8 Alpha A-Mount Macro Lens is an older lens that was originally released in 2006, and it is a macro lens, it has slower autofocus compared to newer lenses, or non-macro lenses. The Sony 100mm f/2.8 Alpha A-Mount Macro Lens was based on Minolta's lens design. Due to the longer focus range from infinity focus to 1:1 macro focus, the Sony 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens does focus slower than non-macro lenses and newer lenses with faster motors. However, it is a full-frame lens and is an extremely sharp option, even at f/2.8, and would be compatible for use on the Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera. The lens does have a focus limiter switch which would allow you to either limit the focus range on the long end of the focus range when using it as a standard lens, or limit the focus range in the macro range to speed up autofocus performance (it prevents the lens from having to travel through the entire focus range from 1:1 to infinity). For a Sony A-mount/Minolta MAXXUM mount macro lens near the same focal length that would have faster autofocusing performance, I would recommend either the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Sony Cameras, B&H # SI10528MDGSM, or or the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 USD Lens for Sony, B&H # TA9028S.

question

is this lens compatible with Sony A7/A7II?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera and the Sony Alpha a7II Mirrorless Digital Camera both use the Sony E-mount, while the Sony 100mm f/2.8 Alpha A-Mount Macro Lens uses the larger Sony A-mount. Unfortunately, the two items are not directly compatible. In order to connect the Sony 100mm f/2.8 Alpha A-Mount Macro Lens to the Sony a7 and a7II Mirrorless Digital Cameras, you would have to purchase a lens adapter, such as either the Sony A-Mount to E-Mount Lens Adapter with Translucent Mirror Technology (Black), B&H # SOLAEA4, or the Sony A-Mount to E-Mount Lens Adapter (Black),B&H # SOLAEA3.

I have a Sony a7R and realize I would have to buy the adapter to use this lens. How does this Sony A mount compare with the Sony E mount (Sony FE 90 MM F2.8 Macro G OSS Model: SEL90M28G) - i.e. quality, speed, focusing? Thanks!
Asked by: S
Hi S, the best compatibility which includes speed and focusing will favor the native mount. That means Sony a7R will work better with a native Full frame E-mount lenses.

question

Is this a full frame lens?
Asked by: Gerry M.
Yes it is a 35mm full frame lens. I use it on my A99 full frame camera and it works great!I use it mainly for the macro close-up, but it also works great as a portrait lens. Also note that it works great on my smaller C sensor A77 camera.
