Celestron NexStar 4SE 102mm f/13 Maksutov-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope
Key Features
  • 102mm Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope
  • 1325mm Focal Length, f/13 Focal Ratio
  • StarBright XLT Optical Coating System
  • NexStar+ Computer Hand Controller
Celestron's NexStar 4SE 125mm f/13 Maksutov-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope is a powerful, versatile, and user-friendly catadioptric-style scope that can be used for observing everything from the moon and planets to bright deep-sky objects like stars, galaxies, and nebulae. Using Celestron's proprietary StarBright XLT multicoating system, light transmission is increased throughout the entire optical path with anti-reflection multicoated lenses, highly reflective multicoated mirrors, and crown optical glass elements. Similar to their Schmidt cousins, the Maksutov design exchanges the conventional front corrector plate with a convex meniscus lens, which results in a smaller secondary mirror—limiting obstruction and increasing contrast, while eliminating the need for periodic collimation. While the focal ratio is a relatively slow f/13, the scope's optical performance, added to the mount's precision tracking system and integrated equatorial wedge, allows it to be a competent astrophotography/imaging platform for the moon and planets.

Celestron NexStar 4SE Overview

Driving the dual servo motors on the mount is the brain of the NexStar 4SE: the iconic NexStar+ computer hand controller. Packed with 40,000+ celestial objects, it can hold up to 100 additional user-defined destinations and is updatable via the Celestron website. It has multiple alignment procedures to get you observing fast—including the super-easy SkyAlign system. Capable of being used in the Northern or Southern Hemispheres, the NexStar has sidereal, lunar, and solar tracking speeds to accurately follow near- and deep-sky objects, plus nine slew speeds and the ability to automatically trigger a camera's shutter release for Fastar or piggyback wide-field photography or conventional prime-focus astrophotography.

Performance
  • 4" (102mm) aperture
  • f/13 focal ratio
  • 1325mm focal length
  • Maksutov-Cassegrain optical system
  • Front convex meniscus lens corrects spherical and chromatic aberrations and comas (off-axis aberration) across the entire field of view
  • Smaller secondary mirror versus Schmidt-Cassegrain reduces obstructions and increases contrast
  • BK7 optical glass primary mirror
  • StarBright XLT optical coatings: Multilayer aluminum/SiO2 (quartz)/TiO2 (titanium dioxide) mirror coatings with flat reflectivity across the light spectrum for both astrophotography/astroimaging and visual observation
  • Multilayer MgF2 (magnesium fluoride) and HfO2 (hafnium dioxide) anti-reflective lens coatings
  • High-transmission water white glass corrector lens with 97.4% light transmission

Celestron NexStar 4SE Reviews

Good Price Point for First Telescope

I own this scope, bought it here (B&H) and I am happy with purchase. My first scope was a cheap department store scope and I wish now I had not wasted that money and just started with the 4SE. It is easy to setup, easy to use and has a load of features that can take you into astrophotography. (which is a blast) If your looking for your first scope, do not be afraid to jump into one of these SE series. There is plenty of software to help you learn the night sky and this scope will have you looking at planets and the moon all night. Even some deep sky observing can be done with the 4SE. Practice with the included eye piece and do some research before buying more eyepieces and you will save some cash as well.

Great beginner telescope!

This telescope was very easy to setup and use. Once it's aligned, it can determine which stars/objects are above the horizon for viewing, and all you have to do is press a button and it will find it for you. The quality is great, although to see deep space objects you will probably need a different eye piece or larger scope (I am still learning though, so don't fully take my word on that). The only downside is now I want to spend even MORE money on this newly discovered hobby. What have I gotten myself into...

Hi, i cannot seems to see what is the magnification of this 4SEunit?
Asked by: Kathy
The NexStar 4SE comes with a 25mm eyepiece. The focal length of the NexStar 4SE is 1325mm. 1325mm divided by 25mm equals 53x magnification. You can use higher magnification eyepieces such as a 20mm, 15mm, or a 10mm as long as the seeing condition (atmosphere) is calm and steady. The highest useful magnification is 241x. Any magnifications above that limit will overpower the telescope's capabilities and may result in blurry images. Hope this helps!

question

I have the NexStar 4 se telescope now how do I take photos of the Moon and stars with a Nikon camera through that small eyepiece ? I have a T ring adapter model # 93625 for a Nikon camera it fits in the top eyepiece but how do I use my 25mm plossl and other focal length eyepieces to take close up photos of the moon ?
Asked by: Anonymous
So you would not be able to use the T-Adapter with eyepieces. However we do sell the Celestron SLR Camera Adapter with Integral 2x Barlow Lens. Which would give you some more magnification if you needed. Then you can get the T-Ring that you need to attach your Nikon DSLR. You can do the Vello Lens Mount Adapter - T Mount Lens to Nikon F Mount Camera, which will work with the adapter you have now. As well as the 2X Barlow Lens Camera Adapter. question

Does this model track the moon? I want to be able to take HDR photos and Time Lapse of the moon.
Asked by: Antonio
This telescope (after doing a setup procedure) will target the moon and track it for about 30 seconds.

question

What is the aperture of this model?
Asked by: Anonymous
To my knowledge, telescope apertures are simply the diameter of either the objective lens of a refractor or objective mirror of a reflector. That being said, the NexStar 4 SE has a 4 (102mm) mirror and therefore a 4 aperture.
