sE Electronics SEE-RF PRO overview

  • 1Description

The Reflexion Filter PRO from sE Electronics is a reflection filter designed to mitigate the acoustic conditions prevalent in home studios. Traditionally, acoustical treatments have been expensive propositions, requiring extensive testing and construction on various surfaces. With the advent of project and small satellite studios, innovative techniques have surfaced to deal with the economics and practicality of treating those acoustic situations.

The Reflexion Filter Pro aims to address this issue by providing a curved baffle made of six different layers (plus an air barrier); the filter is positioned behind any microphone by means of a variable-position, stand clamp assembly. This reduces the amount of acoustic energy hitting any untreated walls, in addition to which, less of the original source is reflected back to the microphone as unwanted room ambiance.

The unit is portable, allowing the user to bring their own acoustical treatment to any environment. The included mounting setup attaches to any microphone stand and provides a sufficient degree of flexibility for adjusting both the position of the microphone and the filter. Recommendations for use include applications for vocals, horns and reeds, guitar, voice-over, percussion, and live location microphones.

    sE Electronics SEE-RF PRO reviews

Reflexion Filter PRO - Acoustic Absorber is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Design leaves a little to be desired... Overall, I like the effect on sound recorded with this device, however I really don't care for how it attaches to a mic stand. The system wants to attach to a single mic stand - both the screen and the mic itself, which makes for a very heavy and unstable situation. You need to use a VERY heavy duty stand to be able to support the whole thing, and a sandbag wouldn't hurt either. I really wish they included some type of adapter to just hold the screen alone on a separate stand behind the main stand. It certainly works, just make sure to get a good mic stand, a sand bag, and be careful not to knock the whole thing over!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job... While a bit of skill in choosing and placing the mike is required, this device can turn any quiet place into a studio. I use ribbons for voice by personal preference. This device effectively contains the rear lobe and provides a close up, warm sound without having to eat the mike. 4 or 5 inches works great. I am also sure it will be useful when location recording in poor acoustic environments to limit or eliminate audience noises and ambience. Haven't tried that yet. You will need a large footed stand or shot bags to ensure stability, especially if using a small boom stand as the unit is heavy and well made. Dave

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An improvised recording booth I usually track vocals, guitar and bass in my small studio. The room does not have optimal acoustical treatment and due to space limitations I do not have a vocal booth. Usually, I improvise by using a make-shift vocal booth but the results are undesired. I searched for a solution and learnt about the Se Reflection Filter. This Reflection Filter has drastically improved the clarity of my recordings. Now, vocals sound like they have been recorded in an acoustically treated booth. I recommend this product to anyone without a proper vocal booth who wants to achieve clean sounding recordings.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great invention!!! I use the reflection filter to record and produce voice over podcasts shows and voiceover demo reels for actors. The product is amazing because it deadens the sound and takes away echoes. Giving it a quality as if you were in a full size sound isolation booth. Especially for such a great price! It's also a space saver unlike sound isolation booths it doesn't take much space.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from nice product, terrible design The filter itself does some great things sonically for an untreated, but quiet room. The design however leaves a lot to be desired. Even on a sturdy tripod stand, a slight bump can send your mic tumbling to the ground. I recommend removing the mic assembly from the reflexion filter, leaving only the shield, and booming your mic over the top of the shield on a seperate stand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product, but could use refinement I do a lot of on-site audio recording for shows and commercials, and in that capacity this is invaluable. It makes it possible to record voice-overs and such in environents where you would never get any useful audio at all (so you can record you voice- overs on location, instead of always hauling talent back to the studio). Don't get me wrong, this it no replacement for a properly set up studio, but when that's not available and you have to get audio NOW it makes the difference. Good things include heavy contruction, lots of adjustment, and a high quality absorbsion shield (not just plastic backed foam like other brands). Bad things include heavy construction (buy a heavy stand) and a mic mounting bar that is far too short, but you can get around that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing is actually useful... Having owned a commercial studio in a real building for ten years and then 'taking it smaller', this solved a whole lot of problems recording in a less than ideal environment (i.e. the project studio). I am now getting back the bang for the bucks I spent on those real expensive name brand multi-pattern tube vocal mics, after struggling with not having a proper room or booth with good acoustic treatments. This got rid of the pile of gobos and other stuff I tried to correct my problems with, let's me set the mic to a nice sounding pattern, and delivers a nice focused, quiet, reflection free performance to the recorder. In retrospect, I could have used one of these in the big room as well - makes the singer comfortable and gives a nice focused, uncluttered area to work in. YOU NEED IT!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just Amazing I run a small voiceover business out of my home office. The room is not itself acoustically treated. I have in the past used a variety of home-brew solutions to control echo, with mixed success. The Se Reflexion Filter Pro is a serious solution. It probably reduces room reflections by 80 %, which is really good by itself. Because I'm a tweak, I also added a pair of Auralex ProMAX acoustic panels *behind* me, to reduce echoes from the direction of the mic's pickup pattern. That probably gets me to 95%, which, for the kind of voiceover work I do, is great. No one would ever know I'm not in a real studio. I spent almost four times as much for my microphone as for this reflection filter, but without the filter, I just wasted my money for the mic, because it picks up every little defect. With the filter, I have a serious voiceover solution.
