    Rotatrim RCM42 reviews

42" Mastercut Professional Rotary Cutter is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cut so Fine It does exactly what it advertises it will do and it's dirt simple. Wanna trim something so fine that it curls the shaved off part of the paper? Use this device. Seriously, this machine makes it child's play to cut photographic paper. The only thing remotely hard is: 1. Initially figuring out exactly where to line up those cutting guides that an get printed onto the media, and 2. Getting large (like 42 wide x 60 long) paper fed into the machine. Paper of that size is just unwieldy and unless you have ample room in front of and in back of the machine to hold the paper, it makes the cutting process difficult. Not a fault of the machine, but something that you should be aware of before you decide to buy one but don't have the space required.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wouldn't use anything but this! This cutter was bought as a second cutter for an expanding studio - the first one I bought a number of years ago, a RotaTrim 24 cutter just like this one but smaller. The original one still cuts very well and gets frequent use, and I have not yet needed to replace the blade - or any other part, for that matter! Once only have I cleaned the blade with some mild detergent after cutting some self-adhesive paper that left glue on it. On both my cutters I have removed the adjustable arm which is used to cut items to smaller sizes. The way I utilize this item is to feed in a very long roll of photo paper with often a large number of prints on it, straight from the printer, then cutting them down to size with ease. The 42 cutter is great as it fits the entire width of paper that we use on our Canon iPF9000 large-format printer, making trimming large prints a pleasure. The quality of this item cannot be surpassed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great cutter, not so great packing (from Rototrim I am an amateur photographer and I have a Canon iPF6450 24 printer and I purchased the RCM42 rotary cutter to trim large photos. Even though it is a bit pricey for an amateur I figured it would last a lifetime. I am extremely happy with this product. It is simple to line up paper. It cuts easily and cleanly, even trimming off as little 1/64th of an inch. The base and cutting head guide are study and the paper hold down strip is easy to use and doesn't slip. I can't find a single issue with the design and operation of this cutter. The reason I took off a star in the evaluation is the packaging. While the outer box was study the Styrofoam inserts were clearly designed for a smaller and lighter cousin of the RCM42; the end caps are especially thin. I actually purchased one of these from a competitor to B&H because B&H didn't list this product. It arrived with a crack in the base even though the shipping box had no damage; it has obviously been dropped somewhere between Rotatrim and my house and the box padding was shattered. I managed to return the unit and get my money back after considerable wrangling (with the competitor mercahnt) and I even contacted Rotatrim and go no responce. I was pleased when the unit became available at B&H and ordered a for a second time. This time the unit arrived undamaged but the again the inside packing foam was shattered. A few additional notes: - The cutting area is easy to use even with large paper. I purchased a simple 72x18 folding table for it and paper can drape on both sides. - The cutting deck is about 12.5 wide and it has an adjustable repeat cut stop. This stop is limited to about 10.5. - The end stop is as close to perfectly square as I can measure and when cutting the long edge of a 12x18 photo it will cut square without any fiddling. I don't think there is any adjustment mechanism so this is a good thing. - The paper hold down strip on my unit was a bit sticky at first and it wanted to stay is a lightly popped position. I cured this by slightly loosening the far end hold down screw. - I did a quick check of the measurement grid and it cut to within about 1/32 at 8 width; this is within the width of the grid line. I doubt I'll use the grid for any super precise cuts but it would be good enough for 4x6, 8x10 and similar cuts. - This unit is big but that makes it nice for cutting large stock. I've cut up to 22 by 32 canvas prints for stretching. Having a 42 deck is ideal for my 24 wide printer. - The unit is reasonably heavy and it has sticky rubber feat which elevate it off the table about 1. It doesn't even begin to slide around while working with it, it is extremely stable. - I don't see any way you could cut yourself with it even if trying to do so. - I tested the unit with mat board and it cuts cleanly. I'm not sure if this is recommended but it cut without too much force so I suspect it will hold up with repeated use. I highly recommend this cutter. Just make sure you have a large enough work space because you won't want to move this unit around or put it away when not using it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am very happy with my rotatrim! I use this prodoct several times a week for cutting paper, thin vinyl/ plastic materials, card stock, and photos. I have an older rotatrim cutter, and I love this new one specifically for the grid on the body and the assecories. Overall it is great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful tool This has enabled me to use my time more efficiently - both for photography and bookbinding. I would recommend this product to others. The only con is the stop is not 100% accurate.
