Tiffen 82LLPOL overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 82mm Low Light Linear Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not supports use of a camera's autofocus or auto exposure functions; it is best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, that are not dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

This low light polarizer has less of a polarizing effect than a standard polarizer, allowing for it to be used in indoor and darker situations when available light is at a premium. This filter is also more ideal to pair with others so the filter factor does not become overwhelming. The low light linear polarizer requires approximately 1 stop of exposure compensation.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Low light polarizer is less dense than a standard polarizer, allowing for greater light transmission and more versatility when working in darker conditions.
Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Constructed using Tiffen's ColorCore technology.

    Tiffen 82LLPOL reviews

82mm Low Light Linear Polarizer Filter is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Barley reduces glare. I tried this out on my wet deck. The reduction of glare was barely noticeable. In fact, you have to really look closely to notice any change at all. The glare/reflection remains. You're just barely able to see a little detail below the water. That's it. You will notice a hue change from sepia to blue, but that's about all. I tried a different polarizer and it was night and day. The glare was completely eliminated. I know this is a low light filter and I didn't expect the glare reduction to be very strong but I thought it would do better than this. I'll be returning this because there is barely a difference between using it and not using and getting a standard polarizer. I can always open the aperture up or bump up the ISO.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little too weak I am always looking for weaker polarisers (mostly by trial and error!), and the fact that this one claimed to be low-light caught my eye. Be warned, though I applaud their attempt at producing a useful mild filter, the polarising effect (even at low light) is extremely mild! When you weigh up the negative impact of a standard thickness filter (it's not slim!) against the benefit of the polarizing effect, there is no contest, the polarizing is so weak it's not worth the losses. Sadly I will keep this glass off my lenses.
