Canon 70-200mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its versatile zoom design, image stabilization, and relatively lightweight and compact design, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a Canon L-series lens spanning a useful portrait-length to medium telephoto range. The constant f/4 maximum aperture allows you to maintain a consistent exposure throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the sleeker form factor when compared to other 70-200mm lenses. In regard to its optical performance, this lens employs one fluorite element and two ultra-low dispersion elements, which work in concert to suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing for notable clarity and color accuracy. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in harsh lighting.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, this 70-200mm f/4 also features a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112-320mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
One fluorite element and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. In addition to the single-shot standard IS mode, a second mode is also available that is optimized for panning.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to two different ranges to suit different applications: 3.9'-infinity or 9.8'-infinity.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Optional rotating tripod collar is available and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon 70-200mm f/4.0 reviews

EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 871.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get This lens and you will be happy!!!! Such amazing lens i love the sharpness i tried to compare two lenses F2.8 and F4 and to tell you the truth F4 have much sharper images! perfect for portrait nature and any kind of photography!!! weights 3 times less then 2.8 and gives you much more than 2.8. less expensive and sharper!!! IS works amazingly good!!!Autofocus is really fast and lens by itself have metal housing sealed good from dust and water.Comes with case and hood. if you are thinking about purchasing 70-200mm get F4.0!!! i tried both and 4.0 is newer and better!!! By the way in Low light works perfect! add some Iso And You are good!!! TOTALLY LOVE THIS ONE!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth all the lofty praise? Worth all of the lofty praise? ABSOLUTELY! This truly is photography's Platinum Standard - whether using digital or that old-fashioned stuff, film. I reserve the description "perfect" for almost everything; this lens is a rare exception. No questions whatsoever, absolutely tip-top marks for astonishing clarity, sharpness, colour & contrast; lightning-fast USM auto-focus. On an APS-C (1.6X) sensor body, this shoots like a 112-320mm f/4 lens. It is - basically - a "do it all" telephoto zoom. Considered the f/2.8 version but the added price for the one extra stop just wasn't worth it - to me. The added size & weight was also a factor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Purchase I have wanted this lens for quite sometime but I will admit, the price was what was keeping me from making the purchase. After much thought and prayer I ordered it. What a great lens. Pictures are excellent. It's everything every review says it is. This is my first "L" series lens. It has been my main lens since I purchased it. I mainly photograph exterior landscape pictures and I am amazed at the quality of the pictures this lens produces. At 200mm, pictures are clear and sharp. If you are weighing the purchase as I did and if you can swing the price, you will not regret it at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon's Best 70-200mm Lens I also own the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. However, the above lens though excellent is too heavy. After reading the positive reviews on EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens by Canon, I decided to buy this one as well. I primarily shoot landscapes, so the difference in f stop from 2.8 to 4.0 is not significant for me, since I never shoot below f/8 or f/11. I found this lens to be very light, extremely sharp even at the corners and having a great picture quality. Overall very happy at making the switch to the lighter, sharper and price wise less expensive (as opposed to the 2.8 Mark 2) lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small, Light, Stable, SHARP!! Was up between the f2.8 IS and this lens. I had used the Canon f2.8 IS quite a bit, and I owned the Sigma f2.8 (Sold soon before purchasing this lens). Tried a friend's Canon f4 IS on a trip to the mountains in Colorado and I was sold. I have to do a lot of low light shooting, and I thought I needed the f2.8 IS. Not so. The 5D mk II high ISO/low noise level in combination with this lens makes that possible. Small size makes this much more packable than any f2.8 IS. Get the Canon collar if you need one. *knock offs are not very smooth on this lens. Collar should be included with any 70-200mm lens. Other than that, can't say enough good things about this glass!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome!!!! I have a massive collection of Canon gear, and always go for the fastest L series lenses. In this case, I bought the 4.0 instead of the 2.8 because of the sharpness. I have shot 3 catalogs and 2 editorials now with this lens and it is unbelievably sharp. With a 4-stop IS, it will equal the 2.8 3-stop IS in terms of low light shooting. The 4.0L IS is also years newer than the 2.8, so there are improvements with every aspect of this lens. For your comparison, the two sharpest lenses that I own from Canon are the 85 1.2L (second series) and the 70-200 f4.0L IS.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favorite and Most Reliable Lens I have had 70-200L lenses for the past 8 years starting with a f4L non-IS. Around 2 years ago I upgraded to the f4L IS version. I was highly impressed with the colors and sharpness on my original 70-200 but my IS copy makes those look dull and soft. The IS, despite being one of Canon's older IS technologies, does make a difference. As for the sharpness, it really can't be beat. My 70-200 is perfect proof as to why this range lens is regarded as one of Canon's best L zoom lenses on the market. I have found it to be sharpest between f/7.1-9, but have had no issues with the sharpness even when being used wide open at that f/4. I personally recommend this lens to anyone and everyone. If you don't have a 70-200 L in your gear bag, you really are missing out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic portrait lens I have the 70-200mm f/2.8IS II USM also and I almost sold this lens when I got that one. But man am I glad I didn't. The 2.8 is a monster in size and weight. It's a beautiful lens, of course, but for most portrait work in a studio or on location, you'll find that shooting at f4 works perfectly well for the results you need. Again, I am amazed at the weight difference, which makes this lens so much more versatile. You can easily shoot without a tripod, although your results are always better with a tripod, whereas you must use a tripod or monopod with the 2.8. I love this lens, and use it second only to my 24-105 and my 17-40 lenses. It's a keeper.
