Clearly distinguished by its bright maximum aperture, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a normal-length L-series prime also sporting a robust physical design and advanced optical layout. The impressively fast f/1.2 maximum aperture affords a great degree of control over depth of field for isolating subjects and producing desirable selective focus effects. Complementing these qualities is a sophisticated optical composition, which includes one aspherical element to suppress spherical aberrations in order to achieve notable sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to limit flare and ghosting and promote greater contrast and color accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions. Complementing the imaging attributes, a ring-type USM is employed to deliver quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Overview

Clearly distinguished by its bright maximum aperture, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a normal-length L-series prime also sporting a robust physical design and advanced optical layout. The impressively fast f/1.2 maximum aperture affords a great degree of control over depth of field for isolating subjects and producing desirable selective focus effects. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to limit flare and ghosting and promote greater contrast and color accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions. Complementing the imaging attributes, a ring-type USM is employed to deliver quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control.

Normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an 80mm equivalent focal length.
Exceptionally bright f/1.2 maximum aperture affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus applications and also benefits working in low-light situations.
One aspherical element helps to suppress spherical aberrations and distortion for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.

Yes that will be great. One thing to keep in mind is shooting at the f/1.2. That will leave you with a very shallow depth of field.

question

What is the widest aperture you can focus and recompose using the 50mm f1.2 to ensure sharp focus?
Asked by: Hoang N.
When focusing, the lens is always at its widest aperture. It only changes to the shooting aperture when the shutter is fired. That way you have the most light for your focusing and the shallowest depth of field to be able to see the exact focus you are trying to achieve.

question

50mm f1.2 EF canondoes it focus any faster on smaller aperture ? like say setting f2.0 f2.8 and smaller? i understand it focuses slower than other lenses but does it get any faster focus when stopped down (aperture wise) ?
Asked by: Trudie B.
I believe that all of the Canon EOS cameras focus at full wide open aperture, and then stop down to the selected aperture right before the shutter goes. (In fact just about every SLR/DSLR ever made focuses that way in normal operation). In other words you are always focusing a the widest aperture of a lens, so there should be no difference in speed no matter what aperture is selected.

Yes, optical quality, color and contrast is supreme and there aren't many others lenses that compare, except maybe the Zeiss Milvus 50mm.

Is There any difference between using this lens with an adapter and and using the RF 50mm for the EOS R body?
Asked by: gary
As far as picture sharpness goes, There would be very little difference. The full and proper explanation is not easily put into words, however, suffice it to say that the lenses made specifically for Canon Mirrorless cameras, will provide the optimum performance of the system. While the EF, EF-S lenses will provide excellent results, they cannot be "Optimum". Personally, I have opted to use my EF lenses on my EOS-R body as I have too much $$$ invested in the L line of EF glass. I hope this helps you somewhat. For the real, complete explanation, please go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-swouJ4qS4 for Canon's precise explanation.
