Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Overview

  • 1Description

Clearly distinguished by its bright maximum aperture, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a normal-length L-series prime also sporting a robust physical design and advanced optical layout. The impressively fast f/1.2 maximum aperture affords a great degree of control over depth of field for isolating subjects and producing desirable selective focus effects. Complementing these qualities is a sophisticated optical composition, which includes one aspherical element to suppress spherical aberrations in order to achieve notable sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to limit flare and ghosting and promote greater contrast and color accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions. Complementing the imaging attributes, a ring-type USM is employed to deliver quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control.

Normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an 80mm equivalent focal length.
Exceptionally bright f/1.2 maximum aperture affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus applications and also benefits working in low-light situations.
One aspherical element helps to suppress spherical aberrations and distortion for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Reviews

EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 1068.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It put most of my other lens on the shelf I am not a one to write reviews but this one made me do it. After seeing pictures that I took with this lens I am having hard time using any other of my lens. I was looking for something that would make my portraits sweeter and dreamier and this lens surpassed expectations. Maybe next step will be 85 1.2 (no, definitely) but for now I have or know of no other lens for my gear that gives so much color and dreams and character to my pictures. What I was looking for. If you need sweet smiles with sparkling eyes looking out of a creamy bokeh and surrounded with outstanding outdoor colors, that is it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only sorry I waited! I mainly shoot babies under 2 weeks using only natural light. I have had the 50 1.4 for 4 years so had a hard time justifying the upgrade. I wasn't getting the results I wanted and after doing some research about the issues I was having, the 50 1.2L seemed to be the solution. From the moment I clicked the first shot its been love. Wow! Why did I wait?? I have 3 other L lenses and yes, L does make a difference. Not sure why it took me so long to clue in it would here too. Don't wait. Just buy it. You won't be sorry. My only regret is waiting so long. I'm now going to order the 100mm 2.8L and get rid of all my non-L lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Images I upgraded this lens from my 1.4 for a trip to France where I assumed (correctly) that flash would not be permitted in museums and churches. I am extremely happy with the images captured; I have great images inside the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris while all those around me were struggling with their 3.5 - 5.6 zooms. OK, it's a heavy and expensive lens, but the images are perfectly clear and have a warm and personal feel. Haven't tried serious portraiture with it yet so can't comment on Bokeh, but I sure like the build and feel of the lens. My 1.4 was good, but this lens is a real keeper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Glass!! You know, it is what it is. It's a little soft, which is often the complaint about it, but it renders an image that can't be achieved with any other glass. I've owned this lens before and reluctantly sold it. I really debated getting it again, but I'm really glad I did. It's just a great performer. I'm shooting with the 5DSR and I'm very satisfied with the sharpness. I also have the Sigma Art 50. It is clearly sharper, no surprise there. But the Sigma rendering, again, just doesn't compare to the Canon. No other lens does what this 50 does. So it is personal preference, but I'd definitely buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Low Light 1980,son born, asked salesman for a camera that works well indoors without flash.Bought Olympus with 1.4 lens.Worked great.2007 wanted lens for same reason. This lens,on an inferior body,Rebel xti, takes me back to a time where your camera did not do all your work for you.The Rebel is a great camera, for the price.I feel the camera, and my laziness, are the limiting factors with this lens. With this camera I would definitely get the 50mm1.2 over the 85mm1.2 because of the multiplication factor, and faster focusing. You will have to work for your results, but those results can be FANTASTIC!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent This lens is wonderful. After a quick AF microadjust, it performs beautifully on the 5d Mark iii, with quick AF and sharp images. It's fast enough to create sharp photos on our baby, who never holds still, even at f/1.2. With the high ISO of a modern DSLR and f/1.2, I can shoot usable photos in places so dark I can't even see through the viewfinder (Live View helps here). It's light and relatively compact, and this camera/lens combo is easy to carry all day long (even when carrying a baby too!) One point: its focuses well at all apertures when the appropriate AF point is chosen. Focus/recompose is not a great idea with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Took a snapshot and we were sold... It is hard for me to buy a Canon (6D and this 50mm F1.2) after using many Nikons (one of them was the F4) in the past 30 years. However, took a snapshot of my wife on the first day and both of us were sold. Took a photo of friends in a party using F5.6 and ISO 8000 (yes, thousands, not hundreds) and I just couldn't believe it. Took hundreds of photos during the holidays and I was amazed (or surprised) time after time. Two more good things: No need to use the flash and no need to use Photoshop. I couldn't do better than the 6D and this 50mm F1.2.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hello All Great Lens a little pricey but ohhh the pictures. As an observation one might want to mention which camera they use this lens with. I shoot a 7D and I don't have any focus issues. Yes it shoots FAST- I would recommend this as a good lens with the 7D- but I do not know how it operates with other cameras I have used this combo for action photos, landscapes, and portraits-- al with great results. it takes a little while to master the razor thin focus wide open, but you get great results-- I plan to purchase a 6d FULL FRAME and I am sure the results will be superb Thank you Buy this lens and if you don't like it then sell it.

question

Can I use this lens on a BlackMagic URSA Mini EF? More specifically, does the camera electronics talk to the lens via ATEM switcher? Finally, when making Iris adjustments (from the switcher, are the changes smooth or does the iris step up/down through the stops?
Asked by: Steve M.
Yes, you can use a ATEM switcher to remotely control the iris of an EF lens on the Blackmagic Design URSA Mini. We assume the iris changes will step down incrementally and not in an obvious fashion, I.E., not in full stops.

question

I have a 7D Mark II and a 7D, both with the 1.6 crop sensor. This lens says made specifically for full - frame cameras. What, if anything, will I give up using it on the 7D Mark II? I do realize this 50 mm becomes more like an 80 mm on my camera, but that line, Made specifically for a full-frame sensor seems to need a little clarification before spending over a grand on a lens.
Asked by: Anonymous
I have a 7D and 5D. I can only remember using this lens on the 5D. I don't know of any other difference on the 7D than the crop factor. But I'd ask, why I would buy this lens for 80mm? You might want to check w Canon for a definitive technical answer. Good luck.

question

Can I use this lens with a a6500 and metabones speed booster? What would the field of view and f stop be in that case?
Asked by: Mani B.
The field of view would be more like a 75mm lens, as this is a full frame format lens. As for the Metabones Speedbooster, the f-stop for this lens would depend on which of the Speedboosters you are using.
