Sekonic L-758DR DigitalMaster Flash Meter
Key Features
  • Flash,Ambient,Incident, Reflected Light
  • All-Weather Design
  • Radio Triggering / Includes RT-32CTL Module
  • 14 Custom Settings
The Sekonic L-758DR DigitalMaster is the world's first multi-function light meter that can be programmed to match and be calibrated to the sensitivity of your digital camera sensor or type of film for perfect exposure control.  They have produced an incredible meter that more than meets the needs of the photographic community. This full-featured meter will definitely make everyone happy as it is loaded with every imaginable feature - and then some...

Expanding on the unqualified success of the L-558R, Sekonic has taken the next step and designed a meter that offers advanced features such as Spot/Incident measurement modes, flash/ambient measurements, flash analyzing, built-in PocketWizard wireless triggering, plus Exposure Profiling, Pre-Exposure warning, 14 selectable custom settings, and much more. This weather-resistant meter not only meets the needs of the digital community but can also serve the cinema community. The L-758Cine model will have expanded cine speed (fps) 1 thru 1000, Lux 0.63 to 190,000, Foot-Candle 0.10 to 180,000, Cd/m to 190,000, Foot-Lambert 0.07 to 190,000 and Preset filter compensation values (including Kodak Wratten filter number)

The L-758DR measures light beyond the capabilities of your camera and ensure repeatable accurate and consistent measurements. In addition, the dynamic range of a particular digital camera or film can be stored, recalled and displayed. Using the USB transfer cable (included) and the Sekonic Digital Input and Transfer software (included), a digital camera or film's exposure profile can be uploaded from a computer (Macintosh or Windows) to the L-758DR.

Up to three different digital camera or film exposure profiles can be saved and quickly retrieved with a touch of a button. With its Pre-Exposure warning indicators and adjustable mid-tone settings, the L-758DR puts the power of digital exposure control in the palm of your hands.

When you need to take a light reading - think Sekonic.

Important: To comply with local broadcast regulations, Sekonic wireless systems sold in the various markets around the world are designed to operate at different frequencies. When purchasing and/or installing a transmitter module or using the meter with a receiver, be sure that the meter, module and receiver are designed to be used in your location and use the same frequency.

The FCC designation indicates the meter and module are designed for operation in the USA/North American market. Frequencies: CH 1 to 16: 344.0 MHz; CH 17 to 32: 346.5 to 354.0MHz

The CE designation indicates the meter and module are designed for operation in European countries. Frequencies: CH 1 to 16: 433.62 MHz; CH 17 to 32: 434.22MHz

When purchasing and/or installing a transmitter module or using the meter with a receiver, be sure that the meter, module and receiver are designed to be used in your location and use the same frequency.

The wireless flash triggering system used in Sekonic meters consists of two parts that are designed to be used together and operate only at a specific frequency. Do not install a CE marked module into an FCC marked meter or FCC marked module into a CE marked meter as this will produce a unit that is not compatible with either frequency.

Is this (Sekonic L-758DR DigitalMaster Flash Meter) just a flash meter or we can use for light metering (in natural light without using flash)?
Asked by: Alireza A.
yes, you can use it to meter natural light.

With the advent of LED room lighting, and considering all other traditional light sources, what impact(s) do these light sources have on reproducible results from lab to lab?
Asked by: jeff s.
It sounds like this question should be asked referring to a C-700 SpectroMaster. A light meter, like the L-758DR, will inform you of the brightness of the lights and the exposure setting for your camera. The light source, Sun, tungsten bulb, fluorescent bulb, LED panel, all produce light that the meter can measure and produce readings from. However, the color of these lights can be vastly different and there is no way for a light meter to inform you of the problems you have just encountered. You need a color meter to tell you the color of the lights and today, that would be a spectrometer (full range color meter) to show you the spikes and color shifts. Fix it up front or try to deal with it in post (if you are shooting digital).Hope that helps. BTW, I love my L-758DR. Wonderful spot meter. Great Incident meter as well.

This question is similar to another one posted here, but I didn't quite understand the answer from Phil B. Why is the L-758DR-U almost $100 more than the L-758DR? There must be more difference than just the targeted market. I purchased an L-758DR several years ago for the USA market. Am I missing functionality that's present in the -U version, perhaps a programming or profiling ability? I haven't been able to find this information on the Sekonic site.
Asked by: John
Frankly, no functionality loss. In the past few years, 758DR models made for other markets with radio triggering functionality for those other markets have been coming into the USA and disappointing our customers. Sekonic developed a Area naming and packaging strategy. U is for the USA. There is also an A version and others which make it easier for all to know they have a meter that can be used successfully in their market. They warranty is also an issue as well. The USA warranty is 3 year. Longer than anywhere else.

can this sekonic L-758DR can be use in the united states and in asia?
Asked by: christian s.
The difference would have to do with the radio module, since not all countries may allow the same frequencies. However, I don't know the answer to the question.

I understand this meter can trigger Pocketwizards. But after looking on Sekonic's website and reading the manual, it's not clear if the Pocketwizards output can be changed from the meter like it can with the L-458DR. Can the PW's output be changed from the L758DR? Will this meter do what the PW AC3 zone controller does, essentially replacing it?
Asked by: James R.
I'm not 100% sure of this (since I don't use PocketWizards except on the rare occasion) but my belief is the answer is 'no' - the meter will trigger your flashes via PocketWizard but I don't believe that you can use it to change the light output. But hopefully someone else will confirm my impression.

I am a documentary camera man. What would be a better purchase, the L-758DR flash meter or the CINE version? The cine version is much more expensive. Is it really needed for shooting video?
Asked by: Michael B.
The Cine version has more frame rates. Plus Shutter Angles. Plus Foot Candles and Foot Lamberts. My question to you is your need for a spot meter. I do use both the spot meter and incident meter functions. Not everybody who has the 758 uses the spot function. If this it true for you, check out the L-478D meter which has more Cine functions than any meter yet created. You can even make your own frame rates and shutter angles as well as filter pack compensation. Hope that helps.

What's the difference between the L-758DR and L-758DR-U?
Asked by: Sohail K.
The 758DR is a very good example of the new Sekonic world-market branding. In the USA, the packaging is new and product designations end in U . The 758DR has an incorporated radio antenna and transmitter module for PocketWizard USA triggering standards. It is designed to work with the PocketWizard radios system in the USA. It is possible to purchase the 758DR that is made for markets other than the USA and has a different antenna which works with PW in a different frequency (433Mhz). You pay for this feature when you buy the meter and if not a USA market model, it will never be able to work with the USA PocketWizard system. A meter made for a different market also does not carry a USA warranty. Any warranty service would have to be performed by the country the meter was originally intended to be sold in. The USA warranty is 3-years, the longest available in any Sekonic sales area. That said, B&H always sells the USA specified product and never imports products outside of normal USA channels. You can expect to get the very best product and service from a product purchased at B&H.
