Sony SAL14-TC Reviews

So Far So Good!

I've only had the Sony 1.4x a-Mount Teleconverter for a couple of weeks, but the quality of pics I'm getting is excellent. I am using it with the Sony a77ii + Sony 500mm G-Series. AF might be just a smidge slower than without it, but it's still very good. I typically hand-hold my 500mm, but with the extra reach of the 1.4x, that's pretty tough. I wish I could use the teleconverter with my a7rii, but it doesn't support the LAEA3 mount adapter.

Works well with 70-200 lens mounted to a A-Mount Body. Lens will not focus on an E-Mount body in combination with A to E mount convertor.

I have owned the Sony 300mm f/2.8 G lens for a long time. I also had the Sony 2X TC but had mixed feelings about the results I was getting. The 2X caused loss of contrast and in low light my A900 would have difficulty finding auto-focus. After years of second guessing myself I finally bought the 1.4X TC. I wish I had bought it sooner. Other than the expected loss of one f-stop, there is no downside! My A900 is able to focus quickly in dim light and I can not see any degradation to image. In the example below there is zero cropping. Be aware that this TC will only work with some high end Sony lenses and is not compatible with all Sony lenses. Check before you buy.

Very good product

I use the Sony 1.4x with Minolta 200mm 2.8 HS APO G and A900. I don't see optical quality degrade much, only a little lower contrast at wide open, but it is still fully useable. Stop down a little to f/4.5 regain most the contrast back. The pictures look about the same compare to Sigma 100-300mm 4. Only the Tokina 300mm 2.8 stop down to f/4 looks a little bit sharper than the Minolta+Sony 1.4x TC. I guess it is hard to see the small difference between good lenses by taking picture of map without proper test chart.

Sony 1.4X Telesconverter

This was purchased for a Sony G2 70-400mm lens (amazing lens!), LA-EA3 adapter and a7RII camera. This combination works perfectly. The specifications listed on-line were clear that the 1.4x would not allow autofocus for the 70-400. I could live with manual focus. Not a deal breaker, so I ordered the 1.4x. However, no where did I read that there would be a loss of aperture control. So, with the 1.4x installed, there is no way to change the aperture regardless of the mode used (A vs M). All you see in the EVF is F-- nomatter what you change the aperture to. This makes the 1.4x useless for this particular lens. I'm disappointed that Sony does not have a teleconverter solution, like Canon does for its telephotos.

It does the job as advertised.

I am thrilled to have the extra reach to get high quality pictures that I otherwise would have to pass up.

Will it work with Minolta F8/500 mirror lens and LA-EA3 adapter on a6500? Don't care about AF, just exposure and EXIF.
Asked by: Howard
The Sony 1.4x Teleconverter is only compatible for use with the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM II Lens, the Sony 300mm f/2.8 G SSM II Lens, the Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II Lens, the Sony 135mm f/2.8 STF Lens, and the Sony 500mm f/4 G SSM Lens. It is not designed for use with older Minolta A-mount lenses. While you may use the teleconverter with the lenses listed above on the Sony LA-EA3 adapter, the teleconverter would not be designed for use with the Minolta AF Reflex 500mm f/8 lens.

question

I own the FE 4/70-200 G OSS. Would this teleconverter support all functions in the Sony a7s.
Asked by: Anonymous
The SAL-14TC 1.4x APO (D) Teleconverter for Sony & Maxxum AF is for use with Sony Alpha/Minolta Maxxum mount cameras and lenses. It would not be compatible with an E-mount camera such as the FE 70-200mm f/4. B&H does not carry a teleconverter compatible with E-mount lenses and cameras, nor am I aware of one on the market.

question

Will this work with a DT 55-300mm F4.5-5.6 SAM lens?
Asked by: Chris P.
No, that teleconverter will not work. First a lens needs to be 70mm or longer. Using a teleconverter with a shorter lens like 55-300 can damage it. And a lens depending on the camera body needs to be f2.8 or f.4 to autofocus with a teleconverter.

question

Just want to make sure that this will allow full function, including AF of both the Sony AF 300mm f/2.8 G SSM ( 1st version ) and also with the Minolta AF 600mm f/4 APO HS G 9 this is the third or final version that Minolta made) I understand the 1 stop reduction in light.

Yes, the Sony SAL-14TC 1.4x APO (D) Teleconverter for Sony and Maxxum AF will be compatible and autofocus fully with the Sony AF 300mm f/2.8G SSM and the Minolta AF 600mm f/4 APO HS G.
