Sony Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZA Overview

A staple of portrait photography, the Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZA Lens from Sony is able to easily create images with high sharpness and outstanding bokeh, which when combined with the short telephoto perspective ensure a flattering image of your subject. The highlight feature of this full-frame A-mount lens is the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture and circular nine-blade diaphragm, which are used for the selective focus effect as well as its ability to work in low-light conditions. Also, this lens uses a floating elements system and a Zeiss T* coating to deliver clean images with minimal flare at all shooting distances. Additionally, it has an Auto Clutch mechanism for intuitive handling as well as a focus hold button and focus mode switch.

Based on the Zeiss Planar optical concept, this lens uses a design with eight elements in seven groups that helps achieve the large maximum aperture of f/1.4 while helping to minimize chromatic aberrations.
A telephoto prime designed for full-frame A-mount cameras, this 85mm can also be used on APS-C camera systems where it will provide a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
The f/1.4 maximum aperture allowing users to create images with shallow depth of field effects and work in low-light conditions with relative ease.
Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast, and color fidelity.
An Auto Clutch mechanism prevents the focusing ring from rotating when the lens is set to autofocus, allowing for easier, and more natural feeling control over the lens.
A focus hold button and focus mode switch are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Hoping to use this for video, any thoughts on use for rack focus, follow focus?
Asked by: Charles
The Sony Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZA Lens can be used for video for both rack focus and follow focus.. Keep in mind this is the Sony A mount lens (DSLR cameras) and not the mirrorless cameras such as the A7 series.

question

Hi B&H,Can I use this lens for Nikon D700 and Sony a6000? Thank you.
Asked by: Anonymous
To use this lens on a Sony a6000 you will need an adapter. Sony make 2 versions. The LA-EA3 and LA-EA4. See links to these adapters here. Either of these adapters will maintain electronic communication between the lens and camera. To use this lens on a Nikon D700 us the FotodioX adapter shown here. Although there will not be any electronic communication, the FotodioX adapter has a built in iris control.

question

im looking for a low light picture taking . with the a99 sony ... Reviewed by customers tell me. the 85mm f/1.4 Carl Zeiss Planar T* Prime Lens by Sony is better at low light than the Sony 50mm f/1.4 Carl Zeiss Planar T* ZA Lens. can you tell me witch is the best one for low light or is there a better one that the 2 i have picked out
Asked by: Anonymous
Both lenses are great for low light. The main factor between the 50mm and the 85mm lenses is the focal length. You should get the 85mm if you are more into portrait photography because 85mm is a better focal length for portraits. The 50mm length would be better if you are doing more general photography such as street photos or group shots. If you happen to have a zoom lens that covers both of these focal lengths, set the zoom to 50mm and leave it there while you take some photos for a day. The next day, set the lens to 85mm and take some photos. You start to get an idea as to which focal length is better suited to your style of photography.

question

Is this lens weather protected, such as rubber rings etc.?
Asked by: Anonymous
While Sony does list some of their cameras offer weather resistance, unfortunately, Sony does not state weather resistance or list weather-sealing as a feature under Specifications for any of their lenses.
