A staple of portrait photography, the Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZA Lens from Sony is able to easily create images with high sharpness and outstanding bokeh, which when combined with the short telephoto perspective ensure a flattering image of your subject. The highlight feature of this full-frame A-mount lens is the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture and circular nine-blade diaphragm, which are used for the selective focus effect as well as its ability to work in low-light conditions. Also, this lens uses a floating elements system and a Zeiss T* coating to deliver clean images with minimal flare at all shooting distances. Additionally, it has an Auto Clutch mechanism for intuitive handling as well as a focus hold button and focus mode switch.

BEST 85 FOR SONY
People, please stop reviewing this lens on how it works with an adapter on a different system (A7r2). On my A99II this lens is nothing short of magic. Amazingly fast focus, awesome bokeh and images that I can only top with the Zeiss 135. Just buy it!
You get what you pay for--in this case, magic
I use this both for still-life photographs and portraits. It is almost magical. The focus drop off when opened up all the way to f/1.4 is breathtakingly quick. The lens is sharp across the image, even when opened wide. There is the slightest vignetting under very bright conditions at 1.4, but you wouldn't usually be shooting under those conditions anyway. If you have the resources and want to do portraiture or still-life shooting with maximum control, this is the lens for you.
i have this lens
the best lense
AMAZING SHARPNESS!
This lens is amazing. Extremely sharp and no ghosting the bokeh makes images pop causing sort of a 3D effect. After buying this lens I can't seem to take it off my camera (sony a99) in fact,I plan to buy all the prime Carl Zeiss lenses available. I wish they had a longer line of Carl Zeiss lenses available for the alpha full frame models.
Trouble with a7R+LAEA4
Optically I think this lens is good. However, I really don't like it when it comes to ergonomics. The focus ring will turn when focusing (it is not suppose to but this happens sometimes). The focusing motor is so noisy and vibrates. I feel like I am using a lens from the 90s. For me, the worse is that the AF is not really usable for me when I use it with a7R and LAEA4. The center focus point works fine after af micro adjustment. However, the outer points never works. SPecifically, I tested the two points on the right and on the left. They required different af micro adjustment value with the center point! In the end I sold this and got the Signma 85 1.4. Most of the headaches gone away.
