X-Rite ColorChecker Overview

The Xrite ColorChecker Custom White Balance Card is a full size version of the white reference square found on the standard 24-patch ColorChecker Card. This white card is scientifically engineered to provide a precise uniform surface that is spectrally neutral (reflects equal amounts of red, blue and green) in all types of light conditions. The ColorChecker Custom White Balance card gives photographers a way to adjust the digital camera's color sensitivity to match the ambient lighting conditions exactly, in effect, change what that the camera "sees." Even in a controlled studio environment, establishing an accurate custom white balance ensures an accurate image from the start of each new photo session.

X-Rite ColorChecker Reviews

White card does not have to be bright white to white balance

This card works very well. Better than a white piece of paper does under varying conditions. A white balance card needs to be neutral for it to work properly, this Xrite ColorChecker is just that, a neutral shade of light grey. I can achieve a custom balance using my pro camcorder using this card every time, I could not do this using a miscellaneous white piece of paper. The size of this card makes it really easy to frame up on when you are in a hurry. I will never use anything else to custom set my white balance, Xrite got it right! Money well spent if you want to reduce post edit colour corrections or are unable to correct colour with post edit.

It sure is white

If you have ever found yourself searching for something, anything white to do a camera white balance this is the product for you. The whites are far more accurate than than sheet of paper in your back pocket or than white napkin borrowed from the banquet hall table. Simple to use, makes you look like a pro!

It's gray, not white

Be warned, this chart is light gray, not white as depicted. It's closest to the lightest gray patch on the Color Checker chart. Otherwise, a perfectly good product.

question

One reviewer stated that the card is gray while another remarked at how white it is. Which is it, white or gray? If white, is it completely white or does it share space with gray and black?
Asked by: Anonymous
It is actually a light gray. Years ago, it was actually bright white. But Color Scientists have not proven that it is better to white balance with light gray because it is much easier to create a perfectly neutral light gray that a perfectly neutral bright white.
