X-Rite M50103 overview

  • 1Description

The ColorChecker Gray Scale Card from Xrite is a full-size version of the white, 18% gray and black reference square used in the standard 24-patch ColorChecker. This target is scientifically engineered to provide a precise uniform surface that is spectrally neutral (reflects equal amounts of red, blue and green) in all types of light conditions. Photographers can use the ColorChecker Gray Scale as the first reference shot in a series to easily correct image color under most lighting conditions by balancing on the mid tone gray value.

For the studio photographer, the X-Rite ColorChecker Gray Scale lets him or her quickly set up the proper studio lighting ratio between main and fill lights for capturing accurate color with a minimum of after-the-fact manipulation.

In addition, the ColorChecker Gray Scale provides reference values that can quickly be checked and used to adjust colors within most common photo processing software packages.

X-Rite M50103 reviews

ColorChecker Gray Scale Card is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from True calibrated gray scale I bought this to compliment my x rite passport. True color is so important! So is accurate exposure. You cannot have accurate exposure without correct color and you cannot have correct color saturation with poor exposure. I wanted a calibrated way to dial in the exposure for black with detail and white with detail ant be able to show 18% reflective gray scale for setting a custom white balance. This gray scale card fit the bill. Having the exact same color as the x rite color checker passport was perfect for fast manageable color work flow. It is made for studio use. Fills the frame perfectly! Welcome to the family! Now get to work!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Every Photographer Should Have One We used to spend a good amount of time making color corrections in Photoshop, after photo shoots, and then one day we realized that we had a gray scale card available. Ever since we started using that card we've cut down on our post-production color correcting. Because of that we purchased a second gray scale card, so that we would have one for each camera kit. This gray scale card is excellent for performing custom white balances on location and it's small enough to fit in the front of a camera bag (back-pack style) and large enough to get a good reading from. Well worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I take this card with me everywhere, simply place card where it will recieve the exact amount and type of light that your intended subject will. I usually will change the angle of the card just slightly to get say three examples for each room, real estate photography, and then in camera raw 6, I take a white balance of the gray section (little dropper icon) and 99% of the time the x-rite card nails it perfectly. Gets the job done, remember the key is positioning the card correctly to get the right white balnce, takes a little practice.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective... again ! First one came defective with the plastic stuck to the grey areas of the card leaving distinct shiny areas and swirls (see photo). I sent it back for exchange and got a second one with the same issue. This time I sent it back for refund and decided to order the Xrite colorchecker VIDEO card. It arrived with the same issue so I am sending it back. May be Xrite has a quality control issue on their hands. I have other Xrite color cards that I have ordered previously and they were fine. Three months of back and forth and I am officially done with Xrite. Can't recommend their cards to others unfortunately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Tool for Proper Exposure This ColorChecker card is great. The studio I work at has two of the 24-patch cards, but it can be difficult to get a good spot-meter reading from the small white, grey, and black patches. With this card, you can stay close to the camera's POV and easily take spot-meter readings. The main advantage of this card over standard grey cards is that the lab-calibreated white and black pallets give you great confidence in getting the proper dynamic range of a composition. This is especially important if you are using a finicky capture system like chrome film, which we shoot quite a bit of at my studio. It works rather well for general color correction, too.The only problem I have with this product--this applies to the 24-patch version as well--is that it bows and you can never get rid of it. You would figure that a $ piece of planar plastic could be engineered to stay flat, but I guess that bit is too much to ask for. Despite this one irritation, I highly recommend this product. Use it with a spot-meter and you will make better, more consistent photos. Good shooting!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Helpful addition to my kit This has been a very useful addition to my kit. I have several different gray scale and color references (xRite and others) but this one has several really nice features. It is large enough to not get lost in the image, it has just three tonal values, and they are pretty much at the values for setting the black point, the white point, and also the gray point, tonal values that is. I do a lot of copying of artwork and it helps greatly in getting the colors correct but also in setting the exposures and adjustments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! Best with the use of low ISO. higher ISO's will put colored pixels across the image, including the gray card and your readings will be off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what you need them to be. A critical piece for quality and consistent color in digital photography. You don't really need a full color checker, just these three neutral pieces. We've done tests in our studio, and these X-Rite (formally Macbeth) cards have proven reliable for five years easily. We strongly recommend you neutralize to the middle stripe, though.
