Bowens BW3110 overview

  • 1Description

The Bowens Quick Ring with Swivel is a softbox speed ring. Its unique design makes it easier to set up a softbox. Most softbox speed rings require the user to use increasing force while inserting the rods into the ring. By the time the user reaches the last rod, not enough force can be mustered, or too much force is used, resulting in a damaged rod.

The Bowens Quick Ring allows easy inserting of each rod. Then, it pivots in its module, and the user snaps it into place, with much less force than with a conventional speed ring.

    Bowens BW3110 reviews

Quick Ring with Swivel is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick Ring Magic! Initially, I couldn't figure out how this speed ring was going to work, but if it worked the way they said it would and make it easier to put soft boxes together and save me from bending or breaking any rods, I was willing to give it a shot. After my initial inspection, I was pleased. This speed ring is built well and has a quality automatic locking pin that locks the ring into place once it is rotated at the end of the process. I was surprised at how well it worked. The ring locks solidly into place with no, or little chance of failure. I wish I had a few more of these and will be purchasing a few more of these rings for all of my square or rectangle softboxes. The only regret I have about this product is, that it only works with square or rectangle softboxes. It will not work with octo-boxes. Great product!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bad Design But Fixable Speed rings with swivels are much more convenient than regular speed rings. However, I don't know what they were thinking when they designed this one. As you can see in the photo, there are 8 mounting holes; 2 on the swivel axis, and 3 on either side of them. However, what you can't tell from the photo is that 2 of the mounting holes (the ones directly clockwise to the swivel axis holes when looking at it with the release latch towards you) are threaded; one 1/4 and the other being 3/8. That seems practical, but it's actually not good because the tip of most softbox rods will not fit into the 1/4 threaded hole. That creates a huge problem when trying to mount an octabox, as well as a minor but needless problem with square and rectangular softboxes. The problem with mounting a square or rectangular softbox is that it forces you to use the swivel axis mounting holes. The whole point of having a speed ring with a swivel is to relieve tension when inserting and removing the rods. By forcing you to use the swivel axis mounting holes, you still have just as much tension with those two rods, and only relieve tension with the 2 other rods. If you use the four holes 45 degrees from the swivel axis, all four can be mounted without tension. However, that 1/4 threading prevents you from doing so. What would have made much more sense would have been to either not have 1/4 threading at all, or to have the holes 90 degrees from the swivel axis have the threading instead of the 45 degree holes. What I did with mine to solve this was to drill out the 1/4 threading to make it the same size as the other mounting holes. I can now use the 45 degree mounting holes and it works great. Just a shame that I had to modify it like that to get it to work properly. One other thing to keep in mind is that it requires a speed ring insert with an outer diameter of 144mm, rather than the more common and cheaper 140mm insert size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bowens Quick ring Absolutely love this speedring. I use it with the SP Studio systems Balcar mount and it fits right into this Bowens ring. This ring has been a big help when I want to use my larger softboxes. You don't have to muscle all of the rods into place for assembly. When all the rods are in place just lift up on the swivel arm and it clicks into place and you good to go. Really nice for location shooting as well when you want to change areas. Just release the locking pin and box folds in half to put into the back of your car to get to your next spot. Just lock the ring back into place again and your set. Not having to reassemble your softbox every time you make a change is so nice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice quick release speed ring This speed ring is a good value. It seems sturdy and it is pretty easy to use. But I bought it thinking I would use it with an octobox. Wrong! Not enough holes. It's only good for square soft boxes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Much Easier! I myself have an iron grip, but not all of my assistants can put soft boxes together without struggling a little with putting in the last rods. This Quick Ring makes it so easy. Put two rods in at either side (where it hinges) then the 3rd rod goes perpendicular to the first two. The last rod goes in the hinging part, which you then swing shut like a door...and Voila!... it easily snaps into place. A tad pricey, but I will probably buy a couple more when I get a chance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does not work with Octas This will not work with octa boxes or banks. There are 6 machined holes for rods, 1-3/8 16 threaded hole for mounts and 1-1/4 20 threaded hole for mounts. A total of 8 holes. Most rods will fit the 3/8 hole, but to use with an Octa, you must modify the 1/4 hole to fit your rod. Modification will void any warranty. I have several of these, because I'm lazy and I'd rather collapse my boxes to store or travel. Great product and very east to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bowens Quick ring I Really like this speed ring. I have a large 4x6 softbox that was very difficult to set up and take down. Then I came across these and thought I would give one a try. It makes setting up my larger softbox very easy now without having to muscle tension rods into place. I also like that if I want I can just leave box collapsed down And just set it off to the side and have it ready really quickly when I need it again. Nice find.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great I also have the Chimera Quick release rings and they don't work on all my soft boxes, some of them need shorter poles due to the size of the speeding. I decided to give the Quick Ring a try and it fits all my soft boxes with no modifications and is very easy to use. I will get a few more to use after trying one out. I'm very happy with the purchase.
