Kowa TSN-884 overview

  • 1Description

The Kowa straight-viewing TSN-884 88mm PROMINAR PFC Spotting Scope is a world-class caliber optic that redefines standards of color brilliance, sharpness, and brightness consistency. Kowa reinvented themselves again with the TSN-884, fastidiously examining each technological and ergonomic detail to produce the very best all-weather straight-viewing prismatic spotting scope.

The TSN-884 uses an element of pure fluorite crystal (PFC) glass in its construction, which greatly minimizes chromatic aberration. This ensures maximum efficiency in its light gathering, producing a clear visual range and sharp imagery that traditional glass lenses cannot attain at their highest magnifications and with the strongest of subject/background contrast changes. Fluorite is extremely expensive, but the subtle difference between the viewing from the PROMINAR-equipped TSN-884 and even the very best normal scopes would be apparent even to a novice. Kowa's use of their patented C3 prism multi-coating process increases image brightness significantly over their prior-generation models that featured flourite.

The 884's housing is made of a magnesium alloy that defines maximum durability and lightweight construction, resulting in a compact, ergonomic, and functional design for extreme nature and outdoor enthusiasts wanting only the very best. It sets a benchmark for the combination of large objective with small weight and mass.

As the straight-viewing model of Kowa's flagship line, this scope makes for an easy time in sighting your subjects and is best suited to solo observers or for whenever observing from an elevated position.

    Kowa TSN-884 reviews

TSN-884 88mm PROMINAR PFC Spotting Scope (Straight Viewing, Requires Eyepiece) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best I simply think that this scope, combined with the 25-60 wide-angle eyepiece, gives the sharpest image around. Leica is close. I used to be a diehard Swarovski user, but their switch to the modular system has been a mistake in my experience. The image just can't reach the clarity of the scope/eyepiece combo Swarovski formerly used (and other makers still do). I compared my 30-70x 95mm Swarovski, with this scope and the older 80mm Swarovski with 20-60x eyepiece. The clarity of image and accuracy of color in the Kowa won. The depth of focus is narrow, and the scope is a bit fragile. Those would be my two complaints. And I still have not met a repair dept. like Swarovski's, alas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional. Also might save $$!! Am mainly amateur photographer. Spouse a very well skilled birder (and me hanger-on). So, we have spent lots of time with dedicated birders and spent some big bucks on birding tours, so have had lots of chances to see and evaluate many scopes. ABSOLUTELY, WITHOUT A DOUBT, the KOWA TSN 884 (and doubtless also the 883 if you want the angled objective) provides far and away the very best in scoping optics available. Worth it ten-fold just for the spotting scope. But I also wanted to digiscope. I get to use this unparalelled objective as the lens for my camera by adding on another approximate $400 for the KOWA adaptor for my camera manufacturer. Yes, I have to manual focus. Yes, the approximate 680-1000mm reach and 7.7-11.4 f stop means a tripod, cable release, and probably live view or mirror lock is needed. BUT most of those sacrifices are needed however you get that reach (e.g., tele-extender or simply huge lens)and the KOWA optics are phenomenal! In essence, I feel I have gotten what would cost me with a proprietary photographic lens of similar reach ($ for about $$and nearly half the weight. Plus, I have the spotting scope that I feel is absolutely the best in the market. Yep, a lot of money, but if you are in the market for a super telephoto, consider this one. Or if you are simply in the market for a great spotting scope, absolutely consider this one. I am not in any way affiliated with any of these manufacturers (scopes or camera)...just a hobbyist.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very sharp and bright spotting scope The first Kowa scope (TSN-3) I bought in 1988 is still going strong. For my second spotting scope, I figured I couldn't go wrong with this company, and I was right. This is an awesome spotting scope which is sharper and brighter than my first. I am using the Kowa TE-11WZ Prominar 25-60x Zoom Eyepiece. I have also compared it to the newest 85mm Vortex Razor HD model, and I feel this Kowa is noticeably sharper and brighter than that Vortex. Yes, the price is much higher, but worth it in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb optics I got the Kowa 88 scope for birding and wildlife spotting after trying some of the other super premium brands. Was really bowled over by the clarity of the image with no edge distortion. I am really happy with the scope and zoom eyepiece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best Amazing glass. I prefer this over a Swaro STS 65 as the Kowa has less vignetteing at the periphery especially under 60X mag. Primary uses are wildlife viewing and target shooting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Scope This is great scope. I have nothing bad to say about it. I wish they would sell the 30x wide angle eyepiece with it. I had to buy the eyepiece from another country.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kowa 884 Best scope I've viewed through to date. Bought through B&H and saved $500. Leaves Swaro in the dust. I have Swarovski binos that I love, but this scope is the best
