B+W 66-014685 overview

  • 1Description

The B+W 43mm UV/IR Cut MRC 486M Filter is an ultraviolet and infrared control filter that is useful for digital cinematography as well as still photography. While recording video with a CCD or CMOS camera, multi-stop neutral-density filters are used to maintain proper exposure by compensating for increased light levels when widening the camera lens's iris to obtain a narrower depth of field. As the increased amount of light passes through multi-stop neutral-density filtration, visible light is progressively blocked, while infrared light is allowed to pass through. As the proportion of infrared light that reaches the sensor of a camera being used for digital cinematography becomes greater, the results can show unwanted color shifts, particularly in dark areas of the frame such as shadows where the appearance of black is dominant.

When the B+W 43mm UV/IR Cut MRC 486M Filter is applied, 88% of ultraviolet light waves are blocked at 380 nanometers along with 95% of infrared light waves at 700 nanometers, helping to ensure that light falling on a digital camera sensor is limited to the visible spectrum. When used along with multi-stop neutral-density filters while recording with a digital sensor, potential infrared color shifts are prevented or minimized, preserving color accuracy throughout the frame. This filter may also be used to help ensure that the appearance of unwanted blue casts is reduced while recording digital video or still photos under daylight that also features intense ultraviolet light.

The front surface of a B+W 43mm UV/IR Cut MRC 486M Filter includes thirty layers of interference coatings which allow it to limit the light that falls on a digital camera sensor to the visible spectrum. When combined with a wide-angle lens, lower-frequency wavelengths of visible light associated with yellow, orange, and red colors passing through the filter and along that lens type's curved edges can be impeded in a significantly greater degree than higher-frequency wavelengths of visible light associated with blue and violet colors. This can result in an unwanted cool cast along the edges of an image taken with a B+W 43mm UV/IR Cut MRC 486M Filter and a wide-angle lens. To avoid such color shifts along the edges of an image when using this filter, it is recommended not to be used with lenses that are intended to provide an angle of view greater than 60°.

Eight layers of anti-reflection coating are included on the rear glass surface of this B+W 43mm UV/IR Cut MRC 486M Filter. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) prevents internal ghosting and reflections, offers protection to the filter substrate, and helps its rear surface to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. The B+W 43mm UV/IR Cut MRC 486M Filter features an F-Pro brass filter ring for durability and jamming prevention, as well as 43mm front filter threads that allow it to be paired with other filter types. When in use, but not combined with another filter that provides a specific effect, it is recommended to place a clear, protective filter over the B+W 43mm UV/IR Cut MRC 486M Filter to prevent damage to its front interference coatings.

88% of ultraviolet light waves are blocked at 380 nanometers, before which they are further removed, reducing bluish cast of daylight when recording video or still photos.
95% of infrared light waves are blocked at 700 nanometers, after which they are progressively eliminated.
Useful with CCD or CMOS sensors to filter out infrared light pollution that cause color shifts frequently associated with high-definition recording with multi-stop neutral-density filters.
Does not require adjustments to exposure while in use.
Thirty layers of interference coatings on front surface limits light that falls on a digital camera sensor to the visible spectrum.
Multicoated rear surface prevents internal ghosting and reflections.
Constructed from Schott glass for optical clarity.
F-Pro brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.
43mm front filter threads allow use with other filters to protect front surface or combine with other effects.
Plastic case for storage and transport.

    43mm UV/IR Cut MRC 486M Filter is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from B+W 43mm 486 Digital CUT UV/IR I've been buying B+W filters for years. My recent purchase of a Leica M8.2 necessitated the need for a CUT UV/IR Filter to counteract the magenta cast because the M8-M8.2 is lacking the equivalent in front of its sensor. The camera came with the proper Leica CUT UV/IR filters, but they just felt 'cheap'. They were probably fine, but I'm told that they were made in Japan to Leica's standards, possibly by Hoya.Since I was familiar with B+W's quality brass mounts and German Schott Glass, I sold the Leica filters to buy the ones from B+W.I have not regretted this decision. ...I highly recommend B+W filters as well as B+H Photo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Image enhancer for use with M8 I am using this filter on a Zeiss 35mm Biogon lens when attached to my M8.2. This filter blocks IR radiation which might yield to color shifts on black fabrics due to the very thin filter in front of the camera's sensor. This thin filter on the other hand results in excellent detail rendition compared to solutions being implemented in most DSLRs. This B+W filter is very well made and fits firmly, as usual with B+W products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy Very bad. I have requested for an RMA and will be returning this product. I was well aware that this filter works only for filed of view tighter than 62 degree so it isn't useful for wide angle lenses; but that's not the problem. This filter has an extremely wide band-pass and passes a lot of infrared. So actually this filter is of no use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Top quality filter I bought this UV/IR filter to cut the magenta cast I was getting on my Epson R-D1. What more can I say? It works and it's wonderfully well built. And with the MRC coating, I can leave it on all the time to protect my lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality. I use this on lenses for my M8. It works as advertised, and the quality of the build matches that of my Leica. Actually, I only buy B+W filters. They are pricier, but they are worth it as far as value goes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect product Used with the Leica M8 this filter works excellent! At a fraction of what the Leica filters cost. The build quality is also great.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Just for long focals I bought this filter in two sizes to use in my Fuji IS-Pro just to have more versatility. So I can get natural visible light results with that camera as well as I can capture infra-red images with no filter or using special IR filters. The fact that the filter cuts the unwanted UV and IR lights by interference, rather than by absorption sounds like magic or trick. Amazingly, it really works! Pictures taken with this filter show no trace of the effect of infrared light. So, a light and thin coated glass can do the job., but The problem comes from the same properties of interference given by the coatings: the interference varies with the angle of incidence of the light on the glass. This renders this filter unusable with wide-angle and even normal focal lenses, resulting in a greenish gradient from the center to the corners. The center may be neutral, according to the proper white balance, but the green color cast is clearly perceptible around it, the wider the angle. My careful tests have shown that only lenses longer than 50mm (short telefoto) may give acceptable results. That throws away the versatility that I expected from that camera and so I just carry it when I plan to do IR images. So this expensive filter has turned practically useless for me.
