The Tamron SP AF17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] is a lightweight, compact, fast standard zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras. The focal length of this lens is equivalent to approx. 26-78mm in 35mm format.

This lens offers an f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range, to ensure stress-free photographic shots at all focal lengths and distances. Additionally, a broader photographic expression through the use of faster shutter speeds as a result of the maximum aperture offers enhanced photographic pleasure.

Note: Di-II lenses cannot be used with digital SLR cameras using image sensors that are larger than that of an APS-C size imager, or with 35mm film SLR cameras.

Optimized for Digital SLR
The use of XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass optimizes the overall distribution of optical power, and also reduces various aberrations to the absolute minimum while achieving remarkable compactness. In addition, suitable positioning of two hybrid aspherical elements serves to maintain imaging performance and to shorten and compress the entire optical system.
LD Glass
An LD (Low Dispersion) glass element is used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis and lateral chromatic aberrations, a critical factor for enhancing optical quality in digital photography, in order to achieve outstanding optical performance over the entire zoom range.
Enhanced Peripheral Illumination
Peripheral light fall-off is minimized when compared with that of conventional lenses for film cameras, so images are uniformly bright from the center to the periphery.
Internal Surface Coating to Reduce Ghosting and Flare
By employing "Internal Surface Coatings" (i.e., multiple-layer coatings on cemented surfaces of plural elements) and multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements, ghosting and flare due to the reflections that occur when light enters through the front element and reflections caused by the imagers themselves are reduced to the absolute minimum.
Zoom Lock Mechanism
The Zoom Lock prevents unwanted barrel extension when carrying the lens/camera combination.

17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Lens for Digital Cameras is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 72.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This the best bang for your buck lens! Great SHARP lens, even at f2.8!!! Constant f2.8 aperture makes it versatile and good for low light situations. Stopped down it is RAZOR sharp! Even tho people complain about this lens being all plastic.. It is very solid and perfectly designed! It actually has a usable manual focus ring as well. The minium focus distance is remarkable! Good enough for macro shots. Flare is well controled and there is only a slight bit of barrel distorton at 17mm, but not noticable im most situations. My only complaint is that the bokeh (out of focus area) is not the greatest... but its by far not the worst.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LENSES AND CAMERAS TALK TO EACH OTHER I HAVE NOTICED THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE RETURNED CERTAIN BRANDS OF LENSES BECAUSE THEY REFUSED TO FOCUS..This usually happens when a lens has been on the market and a new digital camera comes out..The lens must be returned to the mfg to be brought up to date, no fee is charged for this service. To avoid this problem you should ask the dealer if the lens you want to buy is completely compatible with the camera you want to use it oni personally had this problem with sigma, wanted to use the best lens on the market.sigma 50mm f1.4 with my new sony a99..lens wasn't focusing properly on every photo..sigma had me return the lens to them and they made the update at no charge, now i have the finest lens working for me..had i not known what i just shared with you people i would have returned the lens and lost out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens for the money A very good lens for the money. Great image quality even at f2.8. AF is quick and accurate on my A700. My only concern is how well the lens will hold up over 5+ years of regular usage. I baby my equipment and the zoom ring has developed some very minor front/back play when you push on it. No zoom creep yet but the lens does feel looser than when I purchased it 6 months ago. Tamon lenses are not exactly renowned for tank-like build quality. Bang for buck this lens is one of the best, but if you are hard on your equipment this one does not inspire confidence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best buy for the money I don't do product reviews, but this time it's different. The Tamron 17-50 f 2.8 Di LD lens with a Sony mount is top of the line to my way of thinking. This lens has given me a new level of sharpness I never had with the three other lenses in my bag that I have used for a number of years. It's a faster lens, and is great for indoor/ outdoor, nature photography and portraiture as it take's a crisp clean picture that has a sharpness I really did not expect, yet it is kind to the subject. This lens is still new to me so it will take time for me to discover all that this lens is capable of doing. If you, like me live on a tight budget and can't afford a lot of equipment this is one lens you want to consider for your camera bag. Thanks, Bill Raline, Tennessee

Rated 5 out of 5 by from better result than Carl Zeiss 16-80 I didn't know fixed aperature will give me this much better shutter speed. Image quality is very nice and I am so glad that I own this lens. I had both carl zeiss 16-80 and Sony 16-105 but I prefer this lens over them. I currently have alpha 700 and I will keep this lens forever!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the lens I am giving this 4 stars but only because I it would be nice if the motor was silent but after having this a few weeks, it doesn't really matter. It's fast and sharp and I love having the 2.8 at all lengths. I use this on my Sony a55 and it fits like a glove. I wish Zeiss would make one just like it but they don't. Zeiss lens have magic genies ground into it that sees into shadow detail like no other lens on earth and worth the money. But, for a camera like the a55, this Tamron is the next best thing. You will not regret it buying this lens. It's also light enough to be completely comfortable with around your shoulder all day.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for up close work I recently took this lens on vacation to England and I was actually surprised how versatile it was. The focus is pretty good, but if you want to eliminate focus artifacts around the edges try stand closer to the subject being photographed, or use an f-stop between f4 and f7. The reason I'm not giving this a 5 star rating is because it's almost too wide of a lens. I rarely used it at 17mm. Usually I was shooting at 24mm or 35mm and I found myself wanting a little more zoom towards the 70mm area. It also didn't do very well in low light situations. If you're looking for a wide angle lens to add to your toolkit, give it a go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Indispensable zoom at a great value! I bought this to replace the kit lens on my Sony Alpha a700. The wide end is a modest upgrade but the speed is where this lens becomes irreplaceable. Low light, indoors and hand-held night shots are not a problem. The trade off is the range, of course, which makes it a very limited walk-around lens for daylight, but it remains an excellent lens for indoors, weddings, receptions, landscapes or street shooting. Build, though plastic, feels reassuring and tough. Zoom and focus rings feel positive with just-right resistance. There is some sight focus noise but it hardly matters because it locks focus every time, even at outlying focus points. There is a zoom-lock at 17mm which is very useful for removal and storage. It is sharp at center in every setting but with noticeable corner softness at wide angle and wide aperture. This sharpens up quickly when stopped down, giving consistent corner-to-corner sharpness from f/5.6 to f/13. Want 100% views of razor-sharp tulle in the very corner of the frame at f/5.6? I got 'em. Aberrations are controlled admirably in all but the most difficult situations. Chromatic aberration will be noticeable without 200% view only in high-contrast torture-tests, such as distant leaves against a bright overcast sky. There is no pincushion and only a tiny amount of barrel distortion at wide angle. I tested it side by side with all of Sony's standard zooms and found it the best performer in this regard. Bottom line: there might be one or two better lenses out there for cropped sensors, but absolutely none that come near this value.
