Singh-Ray R-52 overview

  • 1Description

Well-suited to photographing sunsets and sunrises with flat or well-defined horizon lines, the 84 x 120mm Daryl Benson Reverse Graduated Neutral Density 0.6 Filter from Singh-Ray is a specialized graduated filter for selectively balancing high contrast situations. Compared to a traditional grad ND, this filter's 0.6, 2-stop density is in the center of the filter plane and transitions toward one edge while leaving half of the filter area clear to receive full exposures. This configuration is ideal for sunrises and sunsets where the brightest part of the scene is centrally located and is surrounded by a darker foreground and sky. The filter is constructed from optical resin that is both durable and helps to maintain high clarity, and it is compatible with the Cokin P filter holder.

Reverse graduated filter places the most density in the middle of the filter and tapers to one edge in order to accommodate bright horizons and other situations where the brightest part of the image lies in the middle of the composition.
Neutral density 0.6 provides a 2 stop reduction in light in selective areas.
Constructed from optical resin for overall clarity and durability.
Compatible for use with the Cokin P filter holder.
Included filter pouch protects the filter when not in use.

    Singh-Ray R-52 reviews

84 x 120mm Daryl Benson Reverse Graduated Neutral Density 0.6 Filter is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grat Filter, Great Concept I purchased this filter to get better sunset and related shots where there is a very bright skyline. It works not only for that, but I find it a great graduated filter in nearly any situation. I am very pleased with the quality of light. The only drawback is that like any Sing-Ray product it is quite expensive. However, no one else makes a filter like this to my knowledge. Quality is worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great concept This filter is for sunsets or otherwise bright sections of the image running through the middle of the image. This is a plastic filter, but is of exceptional optical quality. Very easy to clean. Storage pouch is protective and labeled. I found that this two stop version was often not enough compensation. But that's why you need the three and four stop versions as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for sunrise along the coast! I shoot a lot of coastal sunrises, and this and the 3-stop version I also have are absolutely perfect for when the sun is at its brightest right on the horizon, and the sky is much lighter the higher you go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent performance I use this filter in all my shots for sunset now, and it gives me constantly perfect results as it promises.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't believe I went without it This is hands down the best ND Filter for those sunset / post-sunset shots. I pretty much had to discard my old photos since the quality pales in comparison to those shot with the reverse ND. This filter does change the hue near the darker areas, but the effect is rather pleasant for evening lighting situations. Takes some time to get used to as you can hardly see the gradient through the viewfinder, but that is not a problem with the product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Buy One! I bought this filter for a recent trip to the Smokies. I knew I was going to shoot some sunrise/sunsets. This filter helped with getting a better exposure. I did use the 3 stop Grad ND Reverse filter more, but I was glad that I also had this one with me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great filter for light at the horizon The reverse graduated filter helps when the light is greatest at the horizon. I got this 2-stop to add to a 1-stop I purchase several years ago. The flexibility of both works great.
