Celestron AstroMaster 70 EQ overview

  • 1Description

Designed as a capable and portable starter-scope, the Celestron AstroMaster 70EQ 70mm f/13 Refractor Telescope is a complete observational platform for viewing the Moon and planets, or comet-hunting. Its manual equatorial mount, when properly polar aligned, can easily track objects using the slow-motion cables with reduced vibrations, and easy-to-read setting circles aid in speeding up celestial navigation to known coordinates. The entire rig assembles and breaks down without the need for tools, so users can set up fast and get observing sooner.

This version of the AstroMaster comes with two eyepieces that yield low and medium magnifications, and a 90° diagonal that sports an integrated erecting prism to correct images and allow the scope to be used as a conventional spotting scope for terrestrial use. The diagonal also places the user's head in a more comfortable position especially when the OTA is pointed at or near the zenith. An adjustable-height stainless steel tripod supports the mount and optical tube, and comes with a center tray that conveniently holds accessories while improving stability and reducing vibrations.

    Celestron AstroMaster 70 EQ reviews

    AstroMaster 70EQ 70mm f/13 Refractor Telescope is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Telescope I bought this item for my grandson and he is thrilled with the telescope. The item is well made and he was so excited he could see the craters in the moon. It's an item I would definitely buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! Got this telescope for the family during Christmas. Extremely easy to set up. Brought it out the first night and we were able to easily see the moon as well as some cool stars. The stand does shake easily if bumped, but I can imagine it being built much mor sturdy. Just don't bump it, simple as that. We look forward to using it much more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Basic Telescope Excellent elementary tool to observe the Moon. I like the superb finish of the product. Though it takes a few minutes to fix it in entirety, if fully disassembled, it gives a satisfactory result once you point it to see what you want. Variable eyepieces provide different experiences in viewing the same object from different perspectives. I'll suggest it for kids' learning tool to explore the night sky.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Scope! Great scope for the price! Crystal Clear Optics. For a budget scope it is tops. Love the dovetail on the EQ mount. I bought this scope because my C90 Mak-Cassegrain scope I also purchased from B&H will fit the dovetail on the EQ mount. So I can switch between scopes without having to carry two tripod mounts.EQ mount is easily setup and functions great!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good telescope This telescope is nice and does the job. I had originally ordered this item online and I didn't receive it on the expected date. But after finding out that ups had lost the package B&H reshipped my order one day express to make up for the inconvenience

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Overall fantastic telescope for the price (one-one-two). The mount is pretty sturdy (more than expected), but it's still this kit's weakest link. The finder (despite bad reviews) works great (glowing red dot that magically moves to stay on target) and once aligned, it works fine to aim the telescope relatively quickly. I use this for photography of the moon (and sun in a few weeks), and it CAN provide excellent results. See attached examples: 1) scaled photo to show how much of the moon fills of a canon 60d cropped frame 2) full-resolution crop from the center of that same moon photo to show detail of the optic 3) full-resolution crop showing Saturn (using 2x barlow) HOWEVER, know what you're getting into....... I wanted to use my Canon 60D, so I purchased this telescope kit(70eq), t-mount adapter (#93419), and camera adapter with integrated barlow (#93640). Though if you do not need the extra magnification, you can focus just fine without a barlow (and buy just the camera adapter (#93625)). For the best optical quality (and to get the whole moon in the photo), I removed the 90degree thing at the end, and inserted the camera/tmount/adapter (w/o barlow). Then I was able to focus at infinity (barely), and get the moon photo I attached. The moon fills 36% of the width of the frame (Canon 60D is a cropped 18MP sensor), resulting in the moon being 1850px wide. I set the mirror-lockup, worked for a few minutes to get the focus perfect, and had to wait 10sec before triggering the wireless shutter remote take the pic after 10sec delay (so it would stop wiggling). So, it's a bit of a pain to get perfect, but completely doable if you're up for a challenge, and I'm EXTREMELY pleased with the final product. FYI, if you leave the 90degree thing, it will not be able to focus the camera. You can get it to work by adding the 2x barlow which decreases light and quality, but it does allow viewing of smaller things e.g. Jupiter/Saturn (moon is too big to fit)
