Celestron Omni XLT 102 overview

  • 1Description

With its large aperture and respectable focal length, the Celestron Omni XLT 102mm f/9.8 EQ Refractor Telescope is an ideal choice for making detailed observations of the Moon and planets, with the capability to resolve distant objects like star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae. Its moderate focal ratio gives it the ability to achieve high magnifications with the addition of optional eyepieces, and thanks to its large 2" focuser the available options are nearly limitless. The larger drawtube also helps to prevent vignetting when using wide-field eyepieces during observation sessions, or when using large imaging-sensor cameras for astrophotography. To allow the use of the included 1.25" eyepiece and diagonal, a reducer adapter is included and installs easily without tools. The scope comes with the manual CG-4 equatorial mount outfitted with steel worm gears on both axes for smooth tracking and stability with two counterweights for proper balancing to ensure smooth movement. Also included is a heavy-duty stainless steel tripod to provide a sturdy and steady platform.

    Celestron Omni XLT 102 reviews

Omni XLT 102mm f/9.8 EQ Refractor Telescope is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Celestron XLT 102 Refractor I like it. It's my first real telescope and the first telescope of any kind in many years, so I'm using it to learn. It was easy to assemble and I had it up and running after an hour or so. I needed to research how to use an equatorial mount, and there are still a few things that are mysterious to me. The setting circles are pretty small; probably too small to be accurate but all small scopes seem to share this issue. More instruction on how to use it would have been nice, but there's a lot available online to cover it. Fit and finish are good. It is a little awkward and heavy to move around unless you take it apart, at least partially. No case included, and you'll need one to prevent mishaps and enable travel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy for $ Don't hesitate at all. For those bucks it is really a steal. Telescope and mount quality highly exceeds what you one could expect for this price. The telescope is a beauty and I can't really see a lot of difference between this telescope and my 127mm APO. CA is literally none existing. Views of the moon are crisp and juicy. The mount is also great. It is smooth and solid but it is also light and this makes the whole set grab-and-go format. The manual control is a joy and I am also planning to buy the motorized control for $.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for planets In my astronomy group we were used to reflectors, and we had a great surprise when this Omni XLT 102 joined in. As it has no secondary in the way, Jupiter looks much sharper. The equatorial mount is sturdy and precise if you know how to point it to the celestial pole. Don't think it will be easy to settle the mount, but it is possible and fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little scope and mount I purchased this mount and scope to be my grab and go unit and it sure has lived up to my expectations. It is a very stable, lightweight, portable mount that packs and sets up quickly. The optics in the 102mm refractor are excellent for the price you are paying for it. I had it out on a night I would say was a 6 out of 10 for air quality and I was seeing the Cassini Division on Saturn. Later I put my 5 refractor (17 lbs.) on the mount and it handled that beautifully. Also the folks at B&H were great to work with and the shipping was very fast. Would highly recommend this setup from B&H.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Celestron has a Quality Problem First I going to say that B&H customer support was great and helpful. Every time I called they were courteous, understanding, and quick to respond. The problem is that I had to call too many times because of Celestron factory problems. I never got a chance to attach the optical tube to the mount. The first time I received it, the fixture that holds the main lens (the white part at the end ) was jammed on the optical tube at an angle. I called B&H and send it back for a replacement. When the replacement arrived, the fixture fell off the tube as I was unwrapping it. I am willing to try again once, but when there are 2 failures of the same thing there is a problem with the factory. There is no way I'd recommend buying this telescope until I knew that the problem is fixed. If you do buy it open the optical tube box first and check it out before opening any other boxes. If you have the same problem send it all back and get something else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid yet portable telescope I needed a scope that I could move in and out of my apartment easily, this fits the bill. Have only used it for some lunar viewing so far, but it provided amazingly clear views. Very easy to setup and a decent size to move around without worry.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from How to tell a quality refractor? I am neutral because I haven't tried that brand before.. but I bought similar aperature telescope .. I find lens to be dirty so I had to buy spanner tool to take all lens apart for cleaning. They do not exactly put them together with gloves, if you must wonder.. They are made in China, so go figure! You need to clean lens ... inside out! Also the alignement between objective lens and eyepieces through diagonal if any must be very, very , very precise down to almost a micron if you know what a micron is.. this is a thousandth of a millimeter to the center! or the image will not be that great! How to tell if it is accurately aligned ? Just rotate the focuser backward and forward off focus and aim at a bright star, the misfocused star must be circular as it grows or shrink.. if it grows a crown or a column or even a parallogram then it is out of alignment.. I explained this at Cloudy Nights but I got ejected out of the online club!
