Nikon 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Well-suited for subjects ranging from portraits to wildlife, the AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED from Nikon is an 82.5-300mm-equivalent telephoto zoom for DX-format cameras. The versatile range of long focal lengths is ideal for isolating subjects and homing-in on distant scenes. One extra-low dispersion element is used to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range, for greater clarity, and a Super Integrated Coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast. A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to three shutter speed stops.

Telephoto zoom is designed for DX-format F-mount cameras and provides an 82.5-300mm equivalent focal length range.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by three stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Nikon 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 reviews

    AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Lens is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 833.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Price/Benefit Don't forget this is a $ lens. The pro version of this lens cost some 10 times! With this in mind, this is a fantastic lens. The VR works smooth, and the AF is fast. Images on a DX format camera are sharp through the zoom range. Don't forget also the weight. In the positive side, it is amazing how light it is, and in the negative, this lightness makes it fill cheap. I have a 70-200 2.8 VR (not the new one), and it is better, especially regarding corner softness and glare, but the price and weigh must be considered. If you plan to travel light, don't want to spend a lot, this is a good choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good lens and an amazing value I use this lens mostly when photographing my son playing at a playground or the beach, or for portraits. This lens is surprisingly sharp especially given the price. I have three other primes, one of them being the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art prime lens ($). I figured I might be slightly disappointed in this lens given its present company. However, I was quite happy with the quality of the images and the capabilities that a zoom in this range gives. Now the fact that I got this lens shipped to my house in less than a day for under $ is amazing. Really. At this price you are crazy not to grab one if you are in need of a zoom lens in this range.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great design, Great product I bought this lens as a first supplement to my Nikon, and as of yet, it has been great. I really like how easily it slides from 55mm to 200mm, and the fact that the focus is internal is very nice. The VR setting is amazing, especially for a lens of this price. The only downsides are that it is slow to focus (I end up putting it in manual focus sometimes), the VR setting is noisy with a high-pitched whine, and it also drains the battery fairly fast. However, this is overall a very good lens, especially for recreational Nikon users such as myself. Side note: People noticably give you much more respect if you have a large lens like this attached to your camera...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! VR is VITAL. DON'T buy this lens without it, except if you use a tripod regularly. My first lens was without VR and I lost many pictures by shaking, so using hand-held was very limited. But with VR, I still lose some because of subject motion (only f/2.8 expensive lenses to fix that...), but it's a lot better. Believe me, it's definitively worth the extra $ or so.Now that I (hopefully) convinced you of the importance of VR, other than that it's a very lighweight zoom lens (plastic). Speed is so-so and it sometimes loses itself while focusing, but once focused it's very sharp. A bargain, really.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Get more reach than your kit lens While my wife and I wanted to get the 18-200 vr lens, our camera (a nikon d60) came with an 18-55 vr, and this lens got us the extra reach with a significantly lower cost than the 18-200. It works great in good light, and provides the reach my wife wanted. For beginning photographers, it has been a great telephoto lens. Even at full zoom, the vr allows us to get good shots with no blur at surprisingly slow shutter speeds. The only downsides, and they are minor, are that the focus sometimes is a little slow, and it seems fairly fragile, especially when zoomed in all the way, but to its credit, it is holding up perfectly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High Quality, Fast Zoom Lens The 55-200mm VR lens performs well at getting you up close and personal to your subjects. The only downside is not being able to focus on objects up close. The minimum focus distance is listed at 3ft., but should probably be closer to 4ft. It seems like a small difference, but at that length, it can be an inconvenience. The lens focuses well, and with adequate speed. I received the lens with a kit, and would probably not purchase it on its own. It's a good product, but for the reasonably small difference in price, it seems a better deal to instead purchase an all-in-one lens. So when I indicate below that I would recommend this, I'm referring to the product itself, as bundled in a kit, and not on it's own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best value for a med-long zoom Yes, it's 5.6 at 200... after that you'll be hard pressed to find flaws with this lens at the price. It's less than $200!!! I've used it for weddings professionally in Hawaii and I can say that for 85% of available light shots, it works fantastic. The VR and iso 800 on my D300 let me go to 1/15th at 200mm with a 40-50% return. It's light and quiet. For me, the only problem was that the way I hold the lens caused me to grip the manual focus ring at front of the lens which rotates during use.... obviously not good. Solution: take the hood from my 35mm f2 and put it on. Now I can balance the lens much better while zooming.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact, lightweight and inexpensive I like this lens. I had the non-VR version of this lens and was not happy with the results, I was getting a vinetting effect. After reading a review that the optics were improved I purchased the VR, after being very pleased with the 70-300VR. Although it is not a speed demon with the auto focus or the f4/5.6 varible, but for the price you can't beat it. The images are sharp, colors accurate and the VR does what it is supposed to do. I primarily use this lens to photograph railroad subjects and find that the zoom range is just right for just about all situations. I highly recomend this lens for all around general use.
