Is the screw insert on top of the Smith-Victor 500UM Universal Adapter accept a 1/4-20 bolt?
The top screw would be 1/4-20 , however you would be better off using a Manfrotto 153 Mole Richardson Baby Adapter - 5/8-5/8 B&H # MA153, which is all aluminum and features a 5/8 pin built into it. An image shown below.

is the adapter metal or plastic...?and the wings of the wing nut are they plastic...?
It's heavy duty plastic with a metal core and metal screw.
