In addition to the main locking knob, it also features a friction control knob, and a separate locking knob for pan control.

The attached MH-655 is an ultra-compact clamp style quick release system that is compatible with plates that fit the Arca Swiss standard. It comes with horizontal and vertical bubble levels, and anti-twist reversible tabs on the plate to prevent slippage when using the head in a vertical position.

Could be better

I have used this head for a few years. And although the ease of the knobs is great and it holds my nikon 55-300 just fine, my big complaint is that I always need an allen wrench with me to tighten the location where the plate and the ballhead meet. Quite frustrating that no matter how I tighten it, it loosens up.

Perfect Small Ballhead

I wanted a small ballhead for my Panasonic G5 and G1 mirrorless cameras. I had another brand which was not satisfactory for the longer telephoto lenses. This one holds extremely well. In fact, I put my Canon 40D with a 200mm F2.8 on it and is was steady as a rock. I have heard others say they use even heavier cameras.

Great Ballhead for lightweight tripod

Great Ballhead that can hold up to 13 lbs. In my opinion Tension Control is a must, Panning Lock is additional treat. This ballhead greatly complements my lightweight MT-8350 MT Series Professional Carbon Fiber Tripod. Arca Swiss compatible.

Great but has Limits

Great things, easy to adjust, easy to you. Great value for the money Not so great things, Sags with D7000 grip and a 24-85 on it. Trying using 80-200 on it and useless. If you know the limitations its amazing. Mine was a gift and I will continue to use it but if you run a full size DSLR , go with a bigger head

Good for the price, but not fully Arca compatible

This is a small, well-built ballhead and is serving me well. It's perfect for my micro four thirds system. However, no product is perfect and there are two negatives I've found that other purchasers should be aware of: 1)The panning base is extremely stiff in cold weather. If you don't shoot in below freezing temps, then this won't affect you. 2)Not all Arca plates or L-brackets will fit this ballhead due to the safety locking mechanism used by Giottos. A small, non-retracting, pin will stick up into the recesses of Arca plates and if the recess in your plate doesn't match the location of the pin, you'll be forced to either not use that plate, or remove the locking pin thereby rendering the plate locking mechanism useless. None of my Arca plates worked with this ballhead until I removed the locking pin (easy to do). Unfortunately, this disables a valuable feature of this ballhead. The included Giottos Arca plate works well with the pin though.

Ideal Medium Ballhead

I was looking for a medium size ballhead that would securely hold my mid-size camera, an Olympus OM-D E-M1. The Giottos MH-1302 with quick release works perfectly for this application. The clamps hold the camera with the 300mm (600 mm in 35mm equivalent terms) lens very securely. The movement is smooth and positive. The pan feature is indispensible for panoramic shots. The single feature that sold me on the Giottos model over other brands was the layout of the main three knobs with ball clamp knob on the left, the pan clamp knob pointing at the user, and the tension knob on the right. With this setup one can keep their right hand on the camera body and shutter release while operating the ballhead's two most used knobs, the ball clamp and pan clamp with the left hand. The ergonomics could not be better.

Excellent Small Head.

question

Is the platform of the quick release plate fitted with cork or rubber? Your photos shows cork but the product photos on the Giottos website show rubber. I would prefer rubber.
