Overview
  • 1Description

Fomatone MG Classic Fiber Paper is a photographic paper with variable contrast in warm tone that is particularly suitable for portrait photography and for working in s. c. retro style.

Fomatone is made using a special silver chlorobromide emulsion that gives a silver image tone shading from brown-green to warm brown, which can be influenced using various types of developers.
The paper base on which the paper is made is colored in compliance with the tone of the developed silver, and this accentuates a rich scale of warm halftones shading from light cream to a saturated brown-(green)-black.
Because of a lowered speed, the paper is mainly suitable for contact works, but it can be used as enlarging paper as well. The contrast of Fomatone MG can be varied in a large grade scale from extra-soft to hard, using color filters.
This paper is made according to an old Neobrom recipe from Czech Brno. Very nice for landscapes, body landscapes, portraits or prints that are supposed to look nostalgic. Also an excellent MLD/Lith Paper (bright red mid tones and lights).
For obtaining warmer tones of the developed silver, shorter developing times are recommended; the best ones are up to three minutes, depending on the type of developer.
It is important to stop the developing process before fixing, and to follow the recommended processing; any deviation could cause heterogeneity of the gray areas on the print. For expressing the image tone, other special developers for warm tone are recommended, such as Agfa Neutol WA, Tetenal Neutral type Liquid, and others.

    Specifications
Process Type Fomatone MG is recommended to be processed by hand (in trays), but processing by machine is possible as well. The processing of Fomatone MG does not differ from other Foma papers. Any usual developers can be used, but the Fomatol LQN and Fomatol P baths are particularly recommended, and while these give a rather brown-green tone, a brown tone can be obtained using the Fomatol PW developer that has been developed particularly for this material.
Base Type Baryta coated fiber based paper
Tone The paper is made using silver chlorobromide emulsion that gives a silver image tone shading from neutral to mildly warm. The paper features a very rich halftone scale from shining white to deep black.
    Weight Double weight, 180g/m2
Contrast The contrast can be varied from extra soft (grade O) to hard grade (4). Fomatone MG is sensitized in blue and green spectral areas and therefore the contrast is controlled using yellow and magenta filters at exposure. If only the blue sensitized emulsion part is exposed (magenta filters), the contrast will be increased and if the green sensitized emulsion part is exposed (yellow filters), the contrast will be lowered.
    Surface Finish Glossy surface
Safelight Compatibility Working with Fomatone MG, the same safelights can be used as with other usual papers, i. e. yellow-green, orange or red lights (filter such as Osram Duka 50, Agfa G7, Kodak OC, Durst Sanat, Ilford SL 2, Ilford 902).
