Sony MDR-7506 Overview

The MDR-7506 is a staple within the recording, film and live arenas. Due to its low impedance and closed-ear design, these headphones do an outstanding job of cutting down background noise while providing plenty of volume in the studio or in the field. Additionally, the closed design helps eliminate headphone bleed when overdubbing in the studio.

The MDR-7506 is an over-ear design and is ideal for use with MIDI workstations, camcorders, or other equipment with less than powerful headphone amplification. The headphone has a foldable design, making it convenient to store or transport, and its coiled cable allows it to stretch and spring back into place whenever you need a bit more reach.

OMG, I was at the Superstore looking for headphones. The sales rep turned me on to these. They are amazing! Great sound and a reasonable price. Would buy again.

these are the perfect match of quality and affordability. I use them to track drums and they hold up to the noise.

I use these headphones on every shoot and I loved them so much I ordered a second pair. Looking for a great production headphone setup this is it. Clear audio for all your video recording needs. Also love that it comes with such a long cable to be able to move around without the fear of it coming un-plugged.

I love these so much. I'm broke so the price of these was perfect. I was expecting a lack of quality given the price, but man oh man they are great.

I been meaning to pick up a pair of these for a while. When the price dropped, I snatched them up. I had a similar Sony MDR from way back in the day. And those sound good. And these are no exception. (I use these for music production.)

An industry standard for a reason

Whether in a recording studio or radio station, you'll always find these headphones there for a reason: they are the best. Just got my third pair (cat ate one ten years ago, other I gave to my wife). Tried my son's pricey Bluetooth phones with the opening of Jurassic Park: bass distortion. Let him hear the same with the MDR-7506 and it was clean. I'll never have a reason to choose any other headphones.

Once standard, now kind of dated

These were the standard headphone when I got into audio engineering. Every club and venue I worked in there was a pair of these on the FOH mixer. When I got into location sound you would see these for boom mic guys and such. Thing is, that was 30 years ago. Back then expectations of audio quality where much different. Decades of tape and vinyl playback had conditioned people to think of treble as audio quality. So any speaker or headphones purporting to be digital ready, or hifi had not just some treble, but a heaping helping of it. That made these headphones good for trying to hear signal coming through at all when cueing sources in a noisy environment. It also had the beneficial side effect of tricking half deaf sound guys into not boosting treble, because these already gave too much! (be real, you almost never want to boost treble in sound engineering, most mics have a presence peak, and when you boost treble you phase shifting in the region our ear detects it the most) I really think these took off in the first place because they fold. That is it. I don't think anyone else was selling a reasonably priced pair of sealed back cans that folded when these were first released. Now there are hundreds of folding phones that are flat, offer decent isolation, and do not put an icepick into your ear with high mids and treble. And let me be honest, I'm in my 50's and played in a lot of loud bands. I've got hearing loss. If the treble is too much for me, it will tear the face off of someone with good hearing. They really are not flat, anyone telling you so either has hearing damage or has very aggressive tastes in music. Truth be told 90% of the reviews you read purporting to be sound engineers or producers are just bedroom beat makers with no real world experience or engineering chops.

I'm told that since these are 63 Ohm impedance, they require a fair amount of power to work properly. In other words, I was told to expect poor results from an iPad or iPhone. Is that correct?

Asked by: stan
It may be fixable depending on where the issue is on the headphone. For a repair option, you could reach out to Pro Sound Services at 212.586.1033. However, the cost of the repair be close to the cost of a new pair anyway, in which case we recommend purchasing a new pair.
