Sony MDR-7506 Overview

The MDR-7506 is a staple within the recording, film and live arenas. Due to its low impedance and closed-ear design, these headphones do an outstanding job of cutting down background noise while providing plenty of volume in the studio or in the field. Like many others here, I have had my fare share of headphones at least 3 brands including Sony but this beats all of them hands down, perfect for audio work if you want to hear details in your sound, of course B&H like always unbeatable price, fast free delivery and great service.

My Second Set of Sony MDR-7506 Headphones

I have used these headphones for over a decade. This pair is hanging next to my media server for use when I'm working locally on the server. I had a cheap set that I used to just give me a hint what was in the media, but I decided to buy a quality pair of headphones and treat myself. The bundled sheepskin ear pads will go on my older set. I hung the carrying case on the wall next to the server to protect the headphones when I'm not using them.

worth the price without a doubt

As usual for Sony products, this set works perfectly and isn't overpriced. Comfortable and audio perfect, it's uses are many especially if your job is editing music, narration, or video files.

Most over-rated headphones in history

I've been an audio engineer for decades. I used to do live sound a long time ago in the 90's. Back then this was basically the only model of headphones you would see at mixing boards in clubs. This made an impression on me so I bought my own pair. But over the years I tried out many others and eventually found that I liked AKG K240 better for critical listening where isolation isn't required. And Beyer DT770 for cases where isolation is needed. When I came back around and tried these again I was floored by how much treble and high end they have. It's not as if the AKG, Beyer and Grado I own are lacking in treble. It's that the Sony shove it in your ear a bit harder. If you rewind back to the late 80s early 90's when these came into vogue getting high end out of a system was difficult. Many mixers were muddy as hell. The dominant recording medium was magenetic tape. Having an overhyped high end was seen as an asset in that environment. People felt they were getting more out of their gear. They were also relatively cheap and robust compared to other headphones. Plus they folded! Something My AKGs and Beyers still do not do. Now even cheap mixers are quiet and clean. And we can record high fidelity digital audio a number of ways. Now the treble bump on these cans stands out by a mile. Anyone who thinks they are flat has hearing damage. Really, go get your ears checked! As far as Sony goes the V6 and V600 are better. But they all have a family sound that tends towards bright.

One of the few pleasurable things from the Vietnam War was the availability of good quality sound systems at affordable prices. Expensive blue tooth and noise cancelling have their place but the sound reproduction lacks in my opinion. This MDR 7506 sounds fine.

I'm told that since these are 63 Ohm impedance, they require a fair amount of power to work properly. In other words, I was told to expect poor results from an iPad or iPhone. Is that correct?

Asked by: stan
It may be fixable depending on where the issue is on the headphone. For a repair option, you could reach out to Pro Sound Services at 212.586.1033. However, the cost of the repair be close to the cost of a new pair anyway, in which case we recommend purchasing a new pair.
