The Elinchrom Rotalux Deep OctaBox 39" diameter softbox emits a more focused soft light than most OctaBoxes when used with its included inner and outer diffuser. With either, or both of the diffusers removed, this box acts like a super-large reflector for your Elinchrom flash head.

Further lighting effects are possible when it is used with the EL-Deflector in translucent, silver, or gold reflective colors (available separately).

39" Rotalux Deep OctaBox is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 80.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from There's something about the Deep Octa... ... that makes it different from any other modifier. Double diffused gives you creamy buttery goodness. Single diffused offers a hint of specularity. No diffusers gives a directional bare bulb feel with a soft edge on hard shadows. Perfect size. Great traveler. Exceptionally nice carry case. A little more expensive than other Octas but worth every penny. I disassembled the Elinchrom speedring and installed an AB insert for use with Einsteins. Not a mod for the faint of heart. Obviously my warranty is kaputt but well worth the risk with this Elinchrom Deep Octa/Einstein combo. Gregg Zivney

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good light modifier, terrible to set up I love the lighting I get with the deep softbox, also the amount of control I have over the light is great. I can take off the cover if I need the light to be stronger but still diffused, and I can remove the inner panel to basically have a deep umbrella with harsh dramatic light. They are large enough to light an entire person, but not so big as to be cumbersome. The only down side I see here is the speed ring system. Elinchrom's gotta find something better. It's like trying to pitch a tent in a pitch black cave. I never take them apart because putting them together takes about 20 min a piece and I don't have time for that, but therefore they take up a lot of space in the car if you need to use them on location. If they were easier to collapse down and reassemble they would be perfect, but not being able to do so makes these soft boxes a pain, and deserve a 3 star rating in my book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice light quality The quality of light is really nice with and without outer diffusion. I got this to replace my Paul Buff 35 octa. The Paul Buff modifiers are thick and rugged compared to this box. I take the PB octa with me on location all the time not sure if the Deep Octa is up to the task due to the thin natural of the material used. This is used with the Paul Buff Einstein E640. I got the AlienBees speed ring but the Einstein only locks half way but its enough to hold just fine. The ring does fit AlienBees strobe perfectly. I have to say the first time setup was very difficult to get everything lined up right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light Great quality of light, somewhere between regular shallow softboxes and a beauty dish. I bought it for portrait work, but I see it coming in handy for product use as well. A variety of effects can be achieved by combinations of the inner baffle, outer diffuser and plastic deflector (without diffuser cloth). A little bit harder to open and close than the other rotalux boxes I own because of the deepness of the design and octagonal nature, but still more convenient than most designs I have used and worth it for the quality of light. The carry bag is great and the included deflector was a nice surprise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great modifier This is a great modifier- bought it to use with my profoto acute head ( needs a elinchrom to profoto adapter). I found it pretty versatile (3 diffuser- only 2 can be used when using the elinchrom to profoto adapter because of the offsetting in the adapter ring umbrella hole) Most people rating this product simply talk about how complicated it is to set it up but realistically, after a couple setups it becomes extremely easy. The 1st time you insert the rods, it takes time and might fraustrate you a bit but afterward, you do not need to re-install the rods; you can simply keep them installed and fold the rotalux along with the adapter ring into the bag it comes with ( impressive design). Once you re-open it to re-use, it should literally take you 30sec to 1min to install ( no brainer after a few trials) simply set it up on a flat surface and click each rod tip into the ring it comes with and add the diffusion panels and its a wrap. The rotalux itself is a wonder, very well built, the material does not feel cheap and it is pretty sturdy and wont easily rip. for a more punchy image I would recommend having it with the circular plastic diffuser or the 1s panel diffuser and for a softer feel to your images, my recommendation would be to use both diffusion panels. Excellent modifier , you wont regret it at all. It is very very light weight even with the bag. * check out the photo ( test) put it up 16 feet in the air with my avenger boom stand ( lots of wind but it did not really twitch! )

Rated 4 out of 5 by from almost like a collapsible Mola Setti I started out with a Mola Demi 8 years ago with easier contrast but even then I thought of go to the Setti with higher contrast eventually. In 2007 I saw the Deep Throat and thought it would produce the similar effect while I can also travel abroad with it. Modification is needed to be made on the deflector. I did lots of test to match at @ on special back post. The new material feel very nice, lighter but I am not sure it would be more durable than the material used in the large Swiss Octabank. It may sound easier to assemble with the Rotalux ring system than in actuality (on the Deep Throat), so I just keep it in the studio and rarely take it a part until I go to Europe now and then.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light I will use this for studio and environmental portraits. The quality of light from this modifier is so good; it's worth the incredible difficulty in first assembly. My first exposure with this Octa was impeccable. It can be highly directional or the light you don't see until you remove it. Hands down, the best modifier I own, and I own a lot!
