Acratech GV2 overview

  • 1Description

The Acratech GV2 Ballhead/Gimbal Head is a sturdy, heavy duty, yet compact ballhead that is similar in design to most conventional ballheads (unlike the unique Ultimate head). However, the GV2 model has been improved so that it can be locked down when the head is in the 90° orientation, which effectively turns this ballhead into a gimbal-style head. This will now allow the camera to pivot around its center-point, gimbal style.

The GV2 features a low profile design, and sports all-rubber knurled knobs that are more comfortable to use, especially in extreme weather.

    Acratech GV2 reviews

    GV2 Ballhead/Gimbal Head is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Ballhead This is the second Acratech ball head for me in the past 12 years. The first only needed to be replaced because it was stolen a few months ago. Was solid for 12 years.Lightweight, easy to clean, and very solid support with D4 and the 70-200 2.8. I use this with the RRS plates and carbon tripod.Nothing not to like. It is a work of art.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, but solid This is a fairly light weight ball head, but it clamps solidly holding even heavy camera lens/combos. The panning and gimbal features are very useful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous design, light weight, and very strong. I bought this to replace my Manfrotto 488RC4. I kept the RC4 quick release and transfered it to this ballhead. (I've been using RC4 for about 25 years and find it much better than Arca-Swiss.) This is one of the best ballheads available without some sort of Arca-Swiss attachment mechanism and I'm very happy with it so far. I save nearly a pound and it is slightly more compact. It's open cage design means that it should stay cleaner than the 488 which I have had to dismantle to clean. With my typical walkabout lens attached, (a Sigma 17-70), I need only rotate the tension knob about 20 degrees to secure it sufficiently to support the camera at a 45 degree slope (let's call that the worst case application). With my 70-200/f2.8, it requires perhaps 30 degrees. For the more typical case where the camera is sitting horizontally on top, no rotation is required at all when the smaller knob is preset appropriately. In other words, using this is a piece of cake. The only fault is that the pano base chafes slightly at one part of its rotation suggesting that the vertical axis is slightly canted. If this proves to be a nuisance, I will ask for an exchange. The acid test will be an upcoming 6 week trip to France and I can post an update when I return.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and easy to control I purchased this to replace my Manfrotto 488RC4 whose ballhead was never as easy to control as I wished. However I have always been extremely happy with the RC4 quick release plate and never impressed with the Acra-Swiss style. (The RC4 is not just quick release but instantaneous to engage - no knob turning required. I have been using the RC4 for about a quarter of a century and it has never failed.) So, I was looking for a strong but light ballhead to which I could transfer my RC4 and the Acratech GV2 looked to be the best option. Most other ballheads, including the Acratech GP, are only available with ArcaSwiss compatible plates. I am completely happy with the GV2 so far - it is subtantially lighter than the Manfrotto 488 and very smooth and easy to control. When I mount my body (Sony A77M2) and 70-200/f2.8 lens at 45 degrees from vertical, I need only rotate the tensioning knob about 60 degrees to transition from secure to easily movable. With my lighter 17-70/f2.8 lens, only 30-45 degrees of rotation is required. For the more typical horizontal positioning where I am simply plopping the camera onto the plate, even less rotation is required for this transition. In other words, tightening and loosening for adjustment is nearly instantaneous. The only fault is that when I rotate the assembly on the panoramic base, there is some chafing for about two thirds of the rotation suggesting that the alignment between the base and the body is a bit canted. If this annoys me in the field, I'll update the review and perhaps ask for an exchange. The parcel arrived at my door in Canada in less than 48 hours after placing the order - very impressive!
