Manfrotto 055XDB Overview

  • 1Description

The Manfrotto 055XDB Tripod builds on the success of the 3011/3021 series, but has been redesigned to offer even better ergonomics of the leg-angle release mechanism. With fewer features than the 055XB or 055XBPRO and a simpler design, this model is about 0.5 lb lighter, and a more economical choice. It is ideal for use with 35mm and light medium format photographic cameras, and digital or conventional type video camcorders.

The 501HDV Pro Video Head features improved drag in both axes and switchable counterbalance for the latest ultralight high-definition camcorders. A sliding camera plate helps balance uneven payloads due to outboard batteries or matte boxes, dual rosettes permit left- or two-handed pan arm configurations, and the rear-mounted spirit level facilitates rapid setups.

3-faceted center column which totally eliminates column rotation
Leg warmers on 2 legs ease handling in extreme weather conditions, and help to protect the legs
Four leg-angle settings (25, 46, 66 & 88°)
Fixed counterbalance optimized for 5.5 lb (2.5 kg) payloads
Special Teflon-coated discs (used instead of fluid cartridges) ensure smooth movement and consistent friction of the head
Sliding camera plate for uneven camera/lens payloads
Dual pan arm rosettes for left- or two-handed configurations

    Manfrotto 055XDB Reviews

055XDB Tripod (Black) with 501HDV Head is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not recommended for video use I'll give this tripod two stars since it would probably be excellent for still photography. However, for video, unless you're using a mini camcorder under 2 lbs, its pretty much worthless. It was purchased for me to use with a Canon XH-A1 (a relatively light prosumer camera) and it shakes so badly under the weight that most of my footage is unusable when zoomed in. The 501HDV head is okay, but not a truly fluid head. It utilizes a thick grease rather than true fluid for movement and you can definitely tell--especially when trying to do smooth pans and tilts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from IT'S DECENT FOR THE MONEY I bought this for the Canon XH-A1. It has proven to be a steady tripod for most occasions. Wind will be a problem though. You'll need to be very careful while using this, because it will shake around if you touch it too much while your shooting. I've pulled off some nice shots with this tripod though. I'm a professional videographer and use it every week at least. I would say buy it, if you can't afford to purchase something higher end. You'll just have to improve your skill a bit to perfect the use of it. Not a bad thing, but can be frustrating if you're used to the high end of the spectrum. It's better than going handheld, that's for sure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good I am using this with the Sony Nxcam, I think the tripod is very good, for the money, I find that it's strong enough to hold this camera. Pretty fluid head will probably get better with more use. Love that it has a bag! Balancing is a bit tricky, it seems to always start of unbalanced...
