The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro Lens is a large-aperture lens, with a maximum f/stop of f/2.8 when in wide angle setting. The super wide-angle capability of this zoom lens (equivalent range of approx. 25.5-105mm when used with a Nikon digital SLR camera) makes it ideal as an everyday large-aperture lens. In addition, the maximum magnification of 1:2.3 also enables close-up photography.

This HSM version now incorporates the HSM feature, which gives this lens the capability to auto focus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). In addition, with the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) incorporated into this lens, focusing will be quieter and more responsive.

DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result, these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.

Note: Not compatible with 35mm cameras or digital cameras using full-size image sensors (e.g. Kodak DCS14n or DCS PRO SLR/n).

Incorporation of the HSM feature allows it to autofocus with all Nikon DSLR cameras
Minimum focusing distance of 7.9" (20 cm) at all focal lengths
Correction for various types of aberration provided by one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and two aspherical lenses
The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system, which prevents the front of the lens rotating, making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal shaped lens hoods
Zoom Lock Switch eliminates "Zoom Creep" during transportation

17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens! Wide Range PLUS Macro! I currently use a D70 with 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 lens as well as a D80 and the Sigma 17-70mm. I was originally skeptical that this lens would be better, but I was -pleasantly- surprised. The lens provides a wide range, from 17mm to 70mm, but the fact that it has a great macro ability as well really adds to it. While it doesn't provide 1:1 like a true macro lens, it does allow you to get VERY close. The lens is also built very well. It's not very heavy and feels great while you are out taking photos. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for a good walk around macro lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great lens for my D40 This lens has replaced my Nikon D40's 18-55mm kit lens as the one that stays on my camera most of the time. It outperforms the kit lens in every way. It is sharper, has better reach at 70mm, and 2.8-4.5 aperture. There has been little chromatic aberration in shots where I would have expected it. The near macro capability is nice. It is quite a bit larger and heavier than the kit lens, but I don't consider that much of an issue. I didn't care for the front lens cap that was included (difficult to remove with the lens hood on). I bought a Nikon lens cap instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it's Worth It! I've used this lense for 10 months now in alls sorts of situations and it has done a great job! I've shot dance events for Spanish folkorico and flamenco companies and it tracked the dancers with no problems. I've shot a wedding with no problems. I was even asked to shoot formal portraits for my employer and it did a great job. Soon after that request I was commissioned to shoot a poster for a custom bike builder and the pic came out great. Right now I am using it for still life photos and they are tack sharp. I bought this lense on the advice of a former professional photographer it was great avice. Glad to say it was money well spent. I use it on a Nikon D80.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice general use lens I use this lens on my Nikon D200 and am very pleased with it's performance. It is pretty much on my camera all the time now. I've gotten a lot of use out of the large-aperture wide angle setting. Macro shots have been very sharp. For the price, this lens is an excellent value. My main complaint is that I tend to place my fingers on the focus ring which interferes with the autofocus. Also, buy a nikon lens cap with the center-grab. The cap that comes with the lens is useless if you use the lens hood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love love this lens I am a professional photographer - I shoot all styles and types of photography. I love this lens. I was worried buying something for my D200 that wasn't from the nikon brand, but I am so glad I did. This lens is sharp and fast and the color is beautiful as well!! I really am so surprised and impressed. My only complaint is that it is a heavier lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from highly recommended I've research quite a bit of which lens i should start with my D90. I did get my D90 with the kit lens but no compare to this Sigma lens. Great indoor. I've used the D90 kit lens and this gives you far better picture. Focus is just swiftly fast and quiet. I've tried the Nikon 16-85mm. I thought this lens performs better. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens I pruchased this lens to have on a road trip out West. I did not have a wide lens and I knew I would want one for the vast landscapes! I was delighted! I have been back now for over a month and when I edited the pictures, croping and enlarging several I was delighted! I started to rate this lens a 4 because it was not a nikon but that would not be fair! I was also well pleased with the closeup flowers and things! I was down inside a canyon for two days hot dusty! no problems, and as I have arthritis very bad I quite often leave lens attached to camera and in the car. Lens used with D90 Nikon, I did have one problem went to shoot one day and camera went haywire. viewfinder went red and everytime i moved any control I could hear shutter trying to click. Took lens off and reattached and had no further trouble.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally, something we can all agree on! This lens is so versatile, I believe it could work for any photographer! As a student, I take any opportunity to photograph- therefore requiring my equipment to be as eclectic as my subjects. From concerts to events to stock to portraits to photojournalism- I can rely on this lens to help me get exactly what I want! With the wide angle and 2.8 setting, I can finally photograph the whole stage at a low lit concert and see wonderful results. It took me some time to get used to the reversed rotation to zoom, in comparison to Nikkor lenses but after a week or so, I was set. It's a little heavy- but no heavier than your average zoom lens. Overall, I believe this lens is a wonderful suit for just about any photographer!
