Nikon HB-36 overview

  • 1Description

The dedicated Nikon HB-36 Lens Hood is specifically designed for use with the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens.

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

    Nikon HB-36 reviews

HB-36 Bayonet Lens Hood is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Necessary for Outdoor Sports Although a hood seems trivial, I have compared my outdoor youth football photos with and without a hood. Since over the course of a game (or any outdoor shooting) you will be at multiple positions relative to the sun, this hood is a must for sunny days. It also does a good job of hiding dust or dirt that may be on your lens. The dust spots will still be on your image but it won't be as obvious as it would have been without a hood. This hood fits on my 70-300mm lens. The depth does a great job of blocking shallow (but still bright) sun angles. I strongly recommend buying this hood over any of the generic (shallow) ones typically found at your local photo store. Lastly, if you're selling your photos, the hood makes your lens look really long and expensive. Sometimes, that goes a long way towards giving a professional image and justifying a professional price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lost or broken lens hood? Lose or break your lens hood? Don't expose your glass to the light of day without one. Yes, even the best of lens out there will fall victim to flare. I'm sure you could find a generic replacement at less cost, but, for a couple bucks more, here's the genuine article, designed for your specific lens. (believe it: there is good reason for the location, depth, and width of the scalloped cutouts.) So, unless you're looking to upgrade your lens hood to an adjustable bellows lens hood, here is exactly what you need, at a very reasonable price ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not bad for a$insurance policy This was a replacement for the one that came with my 70-300. The original one got damaged while my camera was accidentally kicked from the front seat of a SUV. I am not sure if it in-fact saved the lens and Camera but intuitively it appears to have. in this case being plastic and costing only $means it did what it was designed to do.Even thought one side of the bayonet clip was broken it still worked albeit loosely, but allowed me to use it during the rest of the trip. As far as its primary job it is a great Hood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Snap-click-click into place - Wonderful Stiffness This has got to be the best quality hood that I own, and I have a bunch. It is very stiff and solid, and the snap-click into place is very nice. Snap off, and turn around to snap-click into place reversible for tucking into your bag. Lens cap works perfectly with the hood in regular or reversed positions. Nice hood. Well worth the extra couple bucks. Using it for the VR 70-300mm Nikkor lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from HB-36 Bayonet Lens Hood This hood is sturdy and works well on my Nikon 70-300mm VR lens. One mishap with this lens the hood saved my filter and lens objective from damage. I had to replace the hood but everything else was untouched. A rubber hood never would have protected the objective at all. The only disadvantage is it is pain to use and store because it must be reversed every time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't take vacation without one Shooting sports action on a sunny day without a lens hood can be disastrous. A great shot gets ruined by the glare or those tiny specks of dust on your lens become huge blotches on the photograph. This light and easy to use lens hood keeps the glare out and saves those shots. You can just flip it over and mount it backwards to get it out of the way.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HB-36 Lens Hood by Nikon I love this lens hood! It's very sturdy and snaps on with ease. There isn't anything I dislike about this hood. The only reason I bought just the hood was because I bought the nikon 70-300mm VR from a pawn shop and it didn't come with the hood. Overall I love this hood and can see it lasting a long time! -Dustin

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid piece of plastic. I liked it so much, I got two! Just kidding, I bought one for my lens, not realizing one was included with the Nikon lens. I suppose if it ever breaks I'll have a backup, but I don't anticipate it. Haven't noted any vignetting with normal use. The little marks are useful to help line it up and snap into place.
