Compact standard zoom is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-S-mount DSLRs, and offers a 28.8-88mm equivalent focal length range.
One aspherical element is used to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain sharpness and clarity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A Micro Motor autofocus system provides quick focusing performance and a dedicated AF/MF switch allows for quick switching between auto and manual focusing methods.
Minimum focusing distance of 9.8" is available throughout the zoom range for working with close-up subjects.
Rounded six-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

This lens lists a range of F stops, f/3.5 to 5.6 - does that mean sometimes you get f/3.5, and sometimes you're forced to use f/5.6 without the larger opening option? Thank you.
Asked by: Anonymous
As a general rule, the further you zoom in the higher the f.stop. So, if you're all the way in (shooting at 18mm) you will get f/3.5 and as you zoom in it keeps going up, at 55mm you'll be shooting at f/5.6.

Is this is the lens that typically comes with the camera? I believe mine has worn out and need to replace it. Have had since 2011. Is there a newer version I should consider.
Asked by: Kristie
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens, B&H # CA1855EFS, is the standard kit lens that was available on Canon EOS DSLR cameras in 2011. The most current version of this lens is the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens, B&H # CA185545STM, which was released in 2017. I would state that if your camera was purchased before 2013, the lens you currently own should be fine for your usage needs. If your camera was purchased after 2013, or if you are planning on purchasing a new Canon EOS APS-C DSLR camera, then I would recommend the newer lens. The newer lens has the updated STM Stepping Motor inside the lens, which is designed to provide smoother and more silent focusing when using the Movie AF autofocusing mode for video recording needs. As cameras before 2013 do not have Movie AF capability, while the newer lens is still compatible for use on older cameras, it is not necessary and you would not get the improved benefit from the STM stepping motor.

Sorry, but I do not know the comparison you are asking about. The lens I bought was an exact match for a lens that had broken.
